Another Snippet

Nov 21, 2008 00:28

I'm beginning to think I may not get this done, or at least, not reach 50,000 words by Nov. 30th. But even though it's kind of a scattered mess right now, I actually sorta like what I'm doing. So (and doing this gives also me a boot in the behind) I'm gonna post another little teaser thingie.
Title: Circlet
Genre: Supernatural Romance Fantasy
Warning: Some gore and, I guess, a less than flattering portrayal of Wicca

Rachel (“Silver Wolf Raven”) Fischler wiped her nose with the back of her black velveteen sleeve. She wasn’t sure if crying while casting a binding spell would make the Magick stronger or weaken it, but there wasn’t much she could do about it. The night air was freezing cold so her nose might have been running from that anyway. She sat in a small clearing in the woods where she had swept away the dry leaves of November and crumbled chunks of white chalk to form a crudely drawn circle She held a spool of red ribbon in one hand and the little shapeless poppet she had made last week in Home Economics class.

She chanted the magickal rhyme over and over as despair tore at her envious little heart.

Always Miss Perfect, always the one everyone like. Mostly the one that Josh Littleton likes!

She hated Maggie Connelly with a passion so deep it made her gut twist.

Blessed be, thou creature made of art.
By art made, by art changed.
Thou art not cloth
But flesh and blood.
I name thee Maggie Connelly
Thou art she, between the worlds, in all the worlds,
So mote it be.

She began wrapping the featureless little doll in red satin ribbon. She had managed to get a lot of it from her Home Ec. Class and justified it because it was after all, just more material for this project she was working on. The other girls had given her the usual looks of disdain, and rolled their eyes, but Silver Wolf Raven didn’t care. One day they would all be sorry for the way they treated her.

But Maggie first. Maggie, that little slut that Joshua couldn’t take his damned eyes off of. Oh yes, she would pay for this effrontery!

Rachel cleared her throat and re-centered herself, returning to the task at hand. The spell was not finished yet.

By air and earth,
By water and fire,
So be you bound,
As I desire.
By three and nine,
Your power I bind.
By moon and sun,
My will be done.
Sky and sea
Keep harm from me.
Cord go round,
Power be bound,
Light revealed,
Now be sealed.

Silver Wolf Raven finished wrapping her poppet so thoroughly that all that could be seen in light of the waning moon was red. She closed her eyes and visualized the energy grounding from her the doll, through her hands, her body, into the earth.

“Now no more harm ye do to me, and I shall be the one now free, while you shall be buried in the ground, and ever more shall thus be bound.”

Eyes closed, she raised the poppet overhead and heard a crashing in the underbrush. Her eyes flew open in time to see a great hairy beast leaping at her, fangs gleaming in the moonlight, eyes lit with hellfire.

Silver Wolf Raven had no time to even scream. The animal leaped on her, clawed feet slamming into her chest, and tore her throat out as her arms flailed uselessly in the air and then fell still.

Slavering and drooling blood, the wolf picked up the poppet in its jaws. It made the rounds circling Rachel’s four roughly drawn quarters and lifted its leg, peeing on first the pewter vessel to the west, the black rock to the north, the eagle feather to the east and the candle to the south. Satisfied it trotted off into the woods, gripping the tightly bound poppet tenderly in its mouth.

I managed to avoid tonight's midnight showing of Twilight because (thank goodness!) it's a school night and Tash was not gonna get away with *that* for the sake of these darn sparkly vampires. But it looks like I'll be going tomorrow night. After being deafened by thousands of shrieking teenage girls in H Hall at Comic Con's Twilight preview last summer I'm not exactly looking forward to this. However my daughter has reminded me (repeatedly) how many times she sat through TMNT with her deranged mother so I guess fair's fair.
