Dot jumped when the phone rang, even though she'd been half-expecting it. She even managed to get the phone open with one hand while she was taping a box shut with the other, somehow.
"Hi, Chuck. Sorry, don't mind the noise. I'm just packing some stuff up. How is your concrete jungle?
She secured the tape, then scribbled 'DOT' on the box with a marker while she gave herself a little more mental prep time in the guise of small talk.. Even talking about Val being in the hospital made her frown.
"Val is in the hospital. He has a bleeding ulcer, from what I understand. He's been there since ..last night, but it was too hectic to get in to see him. They got him admitted and everything, so he can have visitors at least. I don't know how long he'll be there, no."
Best not to mention that it reminded her too much of the vigil she'd kept in Satsu's hospital room, even though this circumstance was completely different. There wasn't likely to be the same blank, mindless state she'd eventually found herself in, not this time. Val had a strong and loyal core of friends -- Satsu hadn't had so many. Shaking her head, Dot forced herself back to the present, and gave the other girl Val's room number and other contact information.
"Don't worry if you can't make it down there -- I'm sure just hearing from you would make him feel better."
Chuck frowned more as she listened to Dot ramble, chewed the side of her thumb in worry until she realized how awful that was going to look and forced herself to stop, then she wondered how much of this all she should relay to Marcus.
Great thing to dump on someone while they are entertaining out of state company, even if the guest in question in their cousin. Ugh. Life. Hard.
"How the heck did that happen? Do they have hours where they cut off in room phones or anything?" At least that would be helpful and she could call Val or send flowers or something.
"Evidently, he put off going to the doctor until his stomach made the decision for him. He is a stubborn one, our Mister Val. I don't think they cut off the phones, but if he is sleeping when you call and you startle him awake, he might thrash about and yank out the IV or something. Otherwise I think whenever should be fine."
She sighed, adding, 'I hope I didn't catch you at a bad time."
She reflected, for the millionth time, that this time was Different. This was not Sunnydale. The only demon that had put Val there was Val himself, but that didn't make the situation much easier to take. A little bit, but not much.
"Eush. Guy are just made of the stupid. They are." Chuck shook her head at the idea of waiting until no other choice but to seek medical attention. "I'll maybe call him later then, it's still kinda early and I don't want to wake him up or anything."
Tiny girl shrugged and sat on the edge of her unmade bed...she should change the sheets and remake it, really. "No...not a bad time." At least not now, it would have been really awkward a couple of hours ago though. Chuck glanced at her closed bathroom door, Liam was in there. "Just kinda hanging out with a friend. Marcus' cousin is here for spring break."
"Weelll. I would rather know what was wrong, rather than having to guess, but he's got a point about hospitals. Scary." She shivered, reflexively.
"Oh! That sounds like fun. Tell Marcus I said hi, okay? You showing your friend all the sights? I've been busy lately, myself. I am moving house, so there's a ton of things to do."
She peered around the room, wondering what task to tackle next.
"I've been ah...yeah. Showing him things and stuff. I mean, he's been to New York a lot but we've done some touristy crap just for laughs." And they've done some things Chuck never thought she would, too. God. Not that she wanted to talk about that. "I'll tell the dweeb you said hey if he ever comes back from seeing his girlfrand. Apparently three days without sucking face was killing him."
Chuck never wanted to be one of those types of people. Ever.
"Why are you moving, where are you moving and when are you moving?"
Dot laughed. "Three days? Poor baby! His boy bits must be near about to wither away." She had a good idea where he was coming from, her teasing to the contrary. She thought it best not to get right into that, and moved on.
"I'm moving because an old friend of mine from the Sunnydale days made me an offer too good to pass up. He's living in a little town in the middle of nowhere and he's got a little place he thought would be perfect for me. It was getting to be time I left the nest anyway, you know? I'm in the middle of moving right now -- it's a process."
"I've only ever lived in one place, same apartment. I have no idea what moving involves. Is it a pain to pack everything up?" Yeah, there was no way Chuck was commenting on boy bits and definitely not Marcus'.
"Not too much of a pain -- it's only supposed to be my stuff, but I think my mom is using it as an excuse to clean house. At least we won't have to worry about dishes and things. Plus. moving with a dog is an adventure all by itself."
Dot was sorting through picture albums that very second, putting some of them in a box and leaving others behind. Some of them were mostly-empty, and she figured she would start taking pictures, of the house and the yard and the Loft.
"I didn't know you had a dog. What kind is it?" Small talk, distracting chatter. This was something Chuck could handle. It was easier than thinking about her own problems and less disconcerting than thinking about Val's health.
"I have a big spazdog golden retriever. Her name is Electron, but she also responds to Miss Ellie. In fact, I think I hear her running around downstairs right now."
Dot was a little worried about Ellie making a smooth transition from old house to new, in fact.
