I am beginning to grasp the nature of my own existence, to put recent mental musings into heavy words, and in doing so, am reminded of a beautiful coming-of-age story called My Antonia. It is a breathtaking tale of Bohemian life on the Great Plains, back, of course -- as many contenting books are -- when life was simpler and time passed not by the turning of the minute hand but by that of the earth. That book softened me a little, I like to think, and below I give you one of the many mental tableaux I have pictured in the course of its reading. The quote is from somewhere in the book; the photograph: from somewhere on the internet. All of that is unimportant. What is important is the whole:



It is such a fine morning and I am in such a strange mood. Oh were it the other way around.
