On plastic surgery

Because we are in America, and because I am in yuppieland, a lot of the people here feel obligation to violently protest against any form of plastic surgery, stating that it is fake and that we should love ourselves as we are.

I openly state that I am not against plastic surgery, except for bad plastic surgery that makes you look uglier/has permanent detrimental effects on health.

I am also probably going to get plastic surgery for my eyes after college.

I don't think there's anything wrong with doing slight changes to your face if it'll make you happier every time you look in the mirror.  We can talk about "accepting our bodies/faces for what they are", but the honest truth is that a lot of times, what IS is not what it COULD BE.  And I'm not talking about a 5' girl wanting to be model height; that's just ridiculous.  I'm talking about that tummy flab, that 20 extra pounds or that lack of muscle in your thighs.  Or that uneven eyelid that droops in one corner, the mole on  your nose, the acne that pits your skin. Things that are fixable.  Things that might not be easy to fix, but definitely changeable.

If we take antibiotics for acne, how is that so different from making a small incision in our eyes?

I've always felt that the people who say things like, "Love yourself for what you are" are just too tired of facing their own imperfections and the struggle of fixing them.

Some things are permanent and we can't change them; a LOT of things, we can change through something as easy as changing our diets or reading a few books on the subject.  Want to learn piano?  Attend a $120 community college session on weekends.
