I was in the Disney store at the mall the other day and I heard the trailer for the upcoming Disney film, The Princess and the Frog. Keyword "heard" since the screen hanging over the giant pile of stuffed animals wasn't on. Like, damn, is it that far under wraps?
So, hooray! I finally get to see the actual trailer. Only thing, I'm annoyed that the writers changed certain aspects of her character, notably the name.
I think "Maddie" was a more appropriate name for the time period, but it was deemed too "stereotypical." If you ask me, the name they chose "Tiana," sounds more stereotypical because it sounds more like your everyday "Black girl" name, if that makes sense.
I mean, the story takes place in New Orleans. "Maddie" is short for Madeline, a French name right? Shoot, my great-grandmother's name was Madeline .
That and the fact that her character is no longer a chambermaid. Disney thinks they're being p.c.. I think they're uncomfortable acknowledging a time when that was the only type of work available for Black people. Did Cinderella or Snow White have the same controversy? I think not...
Eh...you can't expect Disney to not go to one extreme or the other...
Oh, yeah, and props to Disney for adding Jennifer Lewis to the cast...she's always crazy. I love it.
