not sure if you even know who this is (i sat behind you on a train three years ago, i'm usually not this creepy, i promise) but if you can indeed live for free, go live in rosendale. the hudson valley is a magnificent place to live (i hail from rhinebeck and am educating myself at bard college), and rosendale is a great little town. the great places that are new paltz and woodstock aren't far, as you know, and if you're concerned about things to do with your time, well, based on the content of your journal, you won't be long looking for a community of like-minded hardworking people in ulster country involved with cultural and environmental doings... also, i know a couple of people who have worked on the clearwater and they all claim that the experience was life-changing.

whatever way you choose to go, though, good luck. i enjoy reading your journal; your path in life is pretty cool.

Honestly I think Rosendale sounds like a good deal-- place to live for free is a big stability factor, and I know you've wanted to learn boat stuff (or you did at one point, anyway), and more permaculture; do you know people there already?
