I'd also pimp a MacBook Pro - those machines are SWEET. And if you install VMWare fusion, you can run Windows games without rebooting or anything else.
I want one, and I'm pretty wed to my desktop running Windows Vista. That alone should tell you how much I think of the MacBook Pro. I'm pretty sure you can even get an educational discount based on your status as a student, or with a hook-up from someone who is staff or faculty at a university.
Even the non-pro MacBooks are pretty amazing for all uses, including games and the service/repair/warranty is really second to none.
If you're going to go with a Windows-based laptop the best I can offer is some spec suggestions (keep in mind these all say 'in your budget range'):
* lots and lots of RAM. * the fastest 'seek time' on the hard drive. * a large hard drive cache. * A video system using nVidia if you can, ATI if you must. Ask to whether the video system's RAM is all shared with system RAM or not. in most laptops it is, but the video system should have some of it's own. The more the better. * As much screen as you can afford. 14" isn't much room, but bigger screens start to get spendy.
And, take the BF shopping with you. I saw the kind of hardware he buys for his own use, he'll have lots of good input.
