Ha! The Rachel Maddow Show gave me a weird 1968 flashback last night (no, not THAT kind of flashback *g*) when she played a speech Ted Kennedy gave in Sitka, Alaska that year. Ted and then-Senator? (I believe) Walter Mondale did quite an extensive tour of Alaska including a lot of the smaller villages - including the village WE lived in at that time, Fort Yukon, north of the Arctic Circle on the banks of the Yukon River. I was all of 7 years old that year but I remember the village all in a tizzy 'cause the last real celebrity to visit was probably comedian Will Rogers in the 1930s (shortly before his death in a plane crash up there). Ted and Walt gave speeches at the school auditorium and my mother, then a high school English teacher, saw to it that we stood in line afterwards to shake their hands. Can't say as it meant anything to me, though. What ALL of us remember was Mondale's little gaffe as he introduced himself, saying "how nice it was to see all your little brown faces out there." Heh...yeah...us white kids were a definite minority in Fort Yukon. But who says that?!

RIP, Teddy. I must admit to underappreciating you; I never wanted you to be Prez and I've frankly had enough of the royal Kennedys...this country is not a monarchy. But thank you, sir, for years of excellent service.
