the math is pretty basic, the statistics are aligned so that you are more likely to lose.

so in the above example, eventually you are going to get to the point where you need to bet $1000 to get your money back, if you win that one.

it sounds logical until you bring exponents into the situation.

You lost me at "the math." ;) This is why when I gamble(actual) I place so that I'm sure to win my money back. Nothing more. Sure, I don't win much(if anything) but I can spend four hours at the roulette table and be maybe 20(plus or minus) different than when I started. And have fun.
