Wow, I won this week's challenge at
sortinghatdrabs. I'm very surprised because this is my first time writing this pairing and I struggled with the prompt right up until the deadline.
Title: Just Business
Pairing: Draco/Rose
Word Count and Rating: 497, PG-13
Summary: Rose is taking this personally.
Warnings: Crossgen, Adultery
Notes: Also for my 100quills Nextgen table, prompt #06: Accusation.
"You're sending owls to my home now? During dinner? Have you lost your mind?"
Rose refused to flinch, and slowly opened her eyes. Before her, Draco stood holding her letter. The trees' colored lights shone in his hair, and the same fog that had chased away the Muggles swirled around him to dramatic effect.
She sat a little straighter on the bench and adopted an attitude of carefully crafted boredom, an attitude she had learned from him. "Good of you to come, Draco."
He held up the parchment. "What is this, Rose?"
She smiled, knowing it was more of a sneer and proud of it. "You played your games. It's my turn."
He had the nerve to look confused. "What are you talking about?" He checked for prying eyes before pulling out his wand and using it to dry a spot next to her. "Is this about me not showing up at your flat last Saturday? Because I already apologized. Astoria's family showed up at the Manor, and I couldn't get away." He gave up trying to catch her hand and touched her hair instead, smoothing damp strands over the shell of her ear.
"I don't care," she muttered. But some traitorous part of her did care, the same part of her that wished she could continue this exciting, forbidden affair, the same part of her that even now wanted to curl against his side and kiss him under these beautiful lights. She forced herself to her feet instead.
"Rose." He reached for her, and she took a hasty step back. "You knew from the start this is how it has to be."
She wanted to slap the sad look off his face.
"I don't like it either," he said and his voice dropped to a seductive purr. "I love you. Do you think it's easy for me to stay away from you?"
"I think this whole thing has been a laugh for you from the start." She dropped all pretense of calm and let her rage burn through. "It's been a chance for you to screw me literally while you screw my family figuratively."
Draco shot to his feet. "What? How can you-"
"Done any business in Tokyo lately?" she interrupted.
His frozen face told her all she needed to know. "It's not what you think."
"The hell it isn't!" Her voice rang through the empty park. "You milked me for privileged information about Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes' foreign expansion and then you blocked us at every turn. You used me!"
"It's just business, Rose," he said quietly.
She leveled one finger at him. "You're going to back out of your Tokyo deal."
"No." He was insufferably calm.
"You are because if you don't," she took a deep breath, "my next owl goes to your wife."
Anger darkened his face and his lips parted in disbelief. "You wouldn't dare."
"You said it yourself." She turned to walk up the illuminated brick path. "This is just business."
Speaking of drabbles,
drcjsnider wrote me the sweetest Snuna
drabble based upon the prompt "butterfly kisses." Her Luna is terrific--compassionate and a little otherworldly, just as she should be.
