Lucius crossed his ankle over his knee, taking care not to muss the crease of his trousers.
"You should go assist your wife, Draco."
"Why?" Draco watched the firelight through a snifter of brandy. "Hermione can dress herself, Father. She doesn't need my help."
"I meant go pick out something for her to wear! I won't have her embarrassing us at the Ministry Ball."
Draco set his glass down. "Hermione would never wear something inappropriate to an important occasion."
"Really?" Lucius expressed his irritation by tapping the hardwood floor with his cane. "Because I recall seeing a 'House-elves are people too' t-shirt at my parole hearing."
His son smothered a grin. "She was just expressing her views to the Wizengamot."
Lucius leaned forward. "If she comes in here wearing a S.P.E.W button, I will not be silent. You might be willing to indulge her beliefs, but I'm not afraid to say what I think."
"Trust me, Lucius. We know that." Both men turned until they could see the vision standing in the doorway.
Draco slowly stood and extended his hand. "Hermione…" Smiling, she crossed the room until her fingers could entwine with his. The long jade skirt of her gown shimmered in the light, and her hair was styled the way Draco liked best: pulled back from her face but otherwise free to fall down her back. "You're gorgeous."
Hermione giggled as he spun her into his arms and bent her backward into a deep dip. "You like the dress, I take it."
"I do."
"And you, Lucius?" She tipped her head back farther until she could see him. "Any complaints?"
When the Malfoy patriarch simply shook his head, Draco whispered in her ear, "I think he's been rendered mute. You should wear a Slytherin-green ball gown every night."
