He walked out into the ocean and the water rippled around his legs, soaking his pants into a dark brown close to black. The fabric grew wetter and wetter the farther out he headed, and soon his fingertips were tickling the waves. His fingers dipped into the warm water on the surface, his palms soon following.
The small currents played with the fabric around his legs and the scarf he had around his hips, which was now fleeting behind him. Above his head, the seagulls cried and a breeze reached down to rustle in his hair. He wasn't sure what he felt.
He stood with the sea up to his waist, its scent filling his nose, its feel brushing over his skin and its being welcoming him. Did he feel longing? Sadness?
“12,000 years does funny things to one's mind, doesn't it?”
“Yeah...” He closed his eyes and swayed in the wind, taking deep breaths of the salty air. The sea compelled him, coaxed him to fall forward after a particular deep breath. As his body broke the surface, he pushed against the bottom with his feet and dived forward. Soon, there would be a deep part in the ocean floor, opening up underneath him...
And there it was. He opened his mouth and breathed out some of the air as he looked down into the darkness beneath. The light from the sun didn't reach the bottom of this pit, but the rays played around him and tried their best. He thought it was cute, but futile.
His arms and legs moved slowly, not enough to push him upward, but still enough to stop him from sinking too deep into the waters' embrace. All he could hear, were the sound of the bubbles coming from his lips and nose. Looking up, he could see them float towards the surface's mosaic above, resembling the soap bubbles he had seen children make. Or the pearls and gems that humanity has coveted for so long.
Slowly, he felt the other consciousness in his mind float out, instead moving with the currents here in this almost weightlessness. He smiled, as he almost felt a hand brush against his cheek. And he laughed, as there was bubble in his ear telling him that he needed to shave to pass as a girl.
The last air in his lungs bubbled towards the surface along with the mirth, dancing with the rays of light. Joining the mosaic.
But he just stayed there, swaying with the water and letting his brother be free. And allowed himself some calmness for a little bit longer. It was painfully silent here, beautifully silent as there wasn't even any dolphins playing around and chattering. Damn he missed those critters...
They would come when the water was even warmer, when there was plenty of food in the bay and their bellies big with babies. That thought made him smile, as he kicked with his legs and reached for the surface. His lungs screamed for oxygen. His skin for the warm sun. And his mind for some other people than the ocean and his brother to talk to.
