Now The Hard Work Begins

It's one week away from the Doctor Who 50th anniversary. That means that the dataset I've been working on for the past two years will be set in stone after Saturday. Jürgen says that after all the last tweaking is finished we will name the dataset and use it in all future analysis about the series. This is done for various reasons but the most important is to be able to have reproducible results when metrics are run.

Jürgen has said that he would like to submit the paper to a serious journal, not just a Doctor Who magazine. I'm taking that to mean he doesn't want to just do a fluff piece but a real analysis paper. That means that Jürgen will be the main writer cause he is, after all, the data scientist of the collaboration. And that's okay. I'd love to see this work go somewhere besides a fan publication. That said, the information gleaned from this analysis will be taken from the paper and reworked in a more palatable form for ordinary Doctor Who fans. That is what I did for seven years at the university.

This article will be an analysis of the Doctor's network of Companions, Companions-Lite, Associates, and Best Enemies. Even eliminating most of the one-offs, unimportant people, and the wallpaper, there are still 321 characters in the network. These are the people we deemed to be important enough to include. And of course, it will be accompanied with the usual pretty pictures.

It has been difficult watching blog after blog post articles about this anniversary knowing that we can't even start until the 50th was over. And even then, it may take quite a while before the article is finished. Editing a paper for Whotopia was difficult but that will pale in comparison.

So wish me luck in both the writing and Jürgen finding a journal to submit this to. I believe this will happen as I have seen Doctor Who papers more frequently in the scholarly arena.
