You mean, no fingers will be pointed except for the one pointed straight at me at the top of the post, right? ;-)
Hey, that was the giving credit thing y'all seem to do when you post those lists of movies or who you'd end up with in a Buffy threesome. Finger pointing would involve a lot of laughing and chanting "Platy and Ronnie sitting in a tree...", and you know I'd never do that. ;)
To answer my own question and expose myself to some potential pointing of fingers, I'm really not emotionally tied up in any of the characters, so I don't think I'd stop reading the septology just 'cause someone died. That said, I'd hate to see Harry make it that far and fail, though JKR seems to be of the mindset that death is just another state of being, so to her dying may not be failure. (I'd agree she's certainly not claiming Lily, for example, failed at anything.) Also, perhaps because of the unexplained potential in what was hinted at in OotP about Ginny, I'd like her to stick around as well.
One thing I will say is if JKR were to kill off a main character, I'm fairly certain the reason she'd do so would be about more than 'Wouldn't it be cool if Character X died?'
On that last point we can agree - and I think the difference is that Rowling actually CARES about her characters. Yes, she's telling a story - but the characters aren't chess pieces to be moved around. I believe she's genuinely fond of them, and no, I don't think she'd kill anyone off just because it would be cool. From all accounts, she agonized about killing Sirius, and we don't even know for sure that he's really "dead" dead.
Personally? I believe Dumbledore will die in the next book, leaving Harry to fight the finale without his mentor and protector (as is traditional in all great fantasy works). But not Ron... please, not Ron.
