It is significant in Don Mckay’s poem that Icarus isn’t sorry for his actions because it gives the read a sense of closure to not feel pity for him because his life was cut short. Icarus’s father warned him about flying to close to the sun like many other parents warn their children not to do things because they are concerned for their safety. Icarus knew he was risking his life by flying to close to the sun like people risk their lives when they choose to excessively speed in their vehicles yet they still do it just for the thrill. Icarus choice in actions leads him to pay the ultimate price of his life but he still got to experience the ultimate thrill of flying and “his prayer: to be translated into air”. He is happy to experience what he did and he doesn’t have to be punished by “touring its high schools to tell student bodies not to do what he done”. He is glad he took the risk and got the thrill of his life that he had been waiting for. He might be sorry for disobeying his father’s orders and directions about how he was suppose to behave when he was flying, but no child goes out looking for ways to disappoint their parents. I think Icarus was just carless and reckless with his choices and had the attitude that nothing would happen to him. He should be a bit sorry because his actions would have cause his father a lot of pain because he would have had to stand by and watch him plummet to the sea without being able to intervene as well as the pain parents experience when they outlive their children.
Dystopian literature has underlying cautionary tones, warning society that if we continue to live how we do, this will be the consequence. The movie I watched that i thought was a good example of this is Waterworld. The movie i demonstrates what could potentially happen to the earth if we don't stop global warming and how it will effect civilization. The characters in the movie however demonstrate dystopian behaviors as a result of what has happened. Waterworld is an epic 1995 post-apocalyptic science fiction film. The film was directed by Kevin Reynolds and co-written by Peter Rader and David Twohy. It is based on Rader's original 1986 screenplay and stars Kevin Costner, who also produced it. It was distributed by Universal Pictures. The setting of the film takes place in the distant future. The film shows how the actions of the way we decided to live our lives today and treat our planet result in the consequence of our earth being inhabitable. The atmosphere and planet have warmed up so much that all the polar ice caps have completely melted rising the sea level so much that it virtually covered all the land. The societies in waterworld are primitive with a patriarchal structure. They live in small groups living off the scrap and debris found floating on the ocean. Due to the limitation of living space and the sparse of resources the number of citizens always stays at a constant number. Strangers are asked to mate with woman to avoid inbreeding however this only occurs when a member has died to avoid over population. People have even started to evolve to have gills and webbed feet. The movie revolves around cheating, lying, and other social control systems because everyone is in a state of poverty and violence. The movie was an excellent example of how human populations are abusing planet earth.
