Menzies Campbell's speech on Thursday caught my attention. Although I don't agree with all of it, the broad thrust on taxation policy is the most encouraging thing I've heard from the Liberal Democrat party for some time.
I'm not sure where my economic thoughts sit in relation to official Green Party economic policy (I really must read up on it sometime), but my current view is broadly that we should reduce (and simplify) income tax and raise revenue by taxing the "bads". Liberal Democrat policy appears to be moving in this direction. I reserve further comment until the detailed proposals are published in July.
The speech is on his blog which is
here. I was impressed that the blog freely permits comments and there is a good balance of those in support of the speech, and those against it (or parts of it). The quality of the comments is generally high and in fact it is arguably more thought provoking to read those than the speech itself.
