Living in the Post-Apocalypse

Today, the main excitement was the gas station on the corner getting a fuel delivery. See, the latest bit of fun here in hurricane-land is, we have a gasoline shortage. Emergency generators are sucking down gas rapidly, most of the local supply is trapped inside gas stations that don't have electricity to run their pumps, and, since the port was closed for days and many of the ROADS were closed, we haven't gotten resupplied much.

Every time a gas station does open up, police cars converge and maintain strict order as the gas is doled out. Here, a long line of motorists and a longer line of pedestrians carrying fuel containers approached the station. The fuel sales went on for hours without the line getting any shorter, until all the tanks were empty. We didn't manage to buy any today, but we've still got about five gallons in the car, and it looks like most of the buses are back up. Which means we can go to work on Monday, we hope.

All four of us, in fact, since my parents moved in until they get power back on, since the nights are getting pretty cold for going without heat. (My immediate neighborhood was very lucky and we never lost power at all.)

I gotta say, I hate Facebook and I double-hate Twitter, but that's what's really been keeping folks informed and together. I've spend more time on FB (finding family, etc) in the past week that I ever did before this.
