Hey, other academics! Check out THIS boycott!

Feb 04, 2012 02:26

Award-winning mathematician Tim Gowers is boycotting the publishing giant Elsevier, and encouraging colleagues and libraries to do likewise.

This is a company that charges $80 just to view an article for 24 hours, for example. Kind of relevant to those of us who like actual medical journal articles for our fic research! (Or is that just me?) It also affects whether your local doctor has the opportunity to learn about the latest research, because he can't afford their subscription prices and doesn't frequent a major academic library. It slows the pace of research, because even active scholars can't get the references they need.

The boycott asks scholars not to write for, referee for or edit for Elsevier-owned journals. Without scholars to write and edit manuscripts for free, without libraries to pay their outrageous subscription fees, good luck staying in business!
