So i had to call my parents today to get them to fax a copy of my health insurance card. i thought st. eds wanted my car insurance for some reason. well anyways i didn't plan on telling my parents about my going to the inauguration but i felt too guilty. so after we were on the phone for a little bit, i finally worked up the nerves to tell me mom, my heart was pounding, i was short of breath, and i almost started crying as i told my mom. i thought she was going to be really upset and frightened that i would be missing 3 days of school and i would be in D.C. with 4 million people and driving and staying with people she didn't know (let alone i am using money they gave me for books). well anyways she was overjoyed and really excited for me. i was kind of shocked. she said my sisters boyfriend Justin might be going on duty with the national guard. pretty awesome. my dad was a little less enthusiastic as expected, but still he seemed supportive and appreciative of my once in a lifetime opportunity. maybe my parents aren't so bad. my mom was excited to tell me that she taught MLK at school today and read the Bryan Collier book "Martin's Big Words" to her class and had them color pictures of the rev. She was really impressed with one child that colored the American Flag behind MLK. What a patriot. Some of them had never heard of King, but I guess at 5-6 years old I was probably pretty clueless too. On our way to D.C., I think we might stop to take a group picture at Little Rock Central High School and at the motel where MLK was slain (its now a museum). We are on on our way to the culmination of the dream after all. Well in a way, but there is no doubt that for the most part Barack Obama was judged by the content of his character and not by the color of his skin in this past election. Sunday night we are going to the free Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen concert. The freakin boss! Born in the U.S.A. baby! I hope he plays something off of "Nebraska" but I doubt he will and his song "My Hometown." What a testament to the destruction of main street and the sense of place lost with the suburban boom. By the way that song he recorded for the movie "The Wrestler" is pretty amazing. Peace.
