Phone Calls

Oct 09, 2012 22:28

Alex was in the kitchen humming softly to Vulpe who was settled on a bar stool watching him. He wasn't all that sure if Jen was even really feeling like eating but he knew she and the baby both needed to get some nutrients in. He knew he had some things to get done and while he'd already called his own therapist he knew he needed to call Davis for ( Read more... )

She answers the phone without even looking, but she is working on notes for Jenny's case. She's more than a little frustrated at the lack of contact from her most difficult client and she's wondering just how much Jen and Alex realize how close she is to putting Jenny on lockdown until she gives birth. Jenny's progress is slow at best but is rather glacial overall. "Dr. Davis," she answers, realizing now that her secretary must be gone because the calls are getting routed directly to her phone.

"Dr.Davis, it's Alex. I'm just calling to let you know that Jen won't be able to make it to her appointment," he leaned back against the kitchen counter.

Davis sighs a bit and rubs her eyes. "Why not?"

"She's sick, we haven't even left for DC yet." Alex ran his fingers through his hair honestly he was glad Jen hadn't wanted to fly yet. He was nervous enough with her being sick during an already rough pregnancy and the baby's health issues.

A flash of frustration fires up in Davis. She respected Alex's need to take her to do this. In fact, she was glad for it. But to have her still down there means less time talking. Sick or not. "And is she physically incapable of making this call to me herself?" Her voice is terse, but she doesn't care.

"She's sick therefore she's in bed resting. I remembered to call my own shrink and thought I'd call you too,"he knows working with Jen is probably like trying to empty the ocean with a bucket so he pushes down his own irritation.

"I repeat, she couldn't call me herself?" Davis pauses and then shakes her head. "Alex, you were the one to call me and say she wouldn't be coming because of this memorial. I respected that. I understand how hard it must have been for her to even go. But the only thing that is keeping me from committing her until after her 25th week is her sense of personal responsibility. It's something she takes a lot of pride in. So, you making this call does not bode well."

"Is there some part of sick that doesn't translate? I know it in other languages." He stiffened up when she mentioned committing her,"Committing her is not a viable option."

"Unless her fingers have fallen off and her voice box is not working, she's capable of calling," Davis says. It isn't a retort, it's just fact. Her voice softens slightly as she says, "Alex, I don't want to commit her. If I did, I'd have done it a long time ago. It takes away the control she so desperately needs in her life. But I need to see her. Her commitment to seeing me twice a week is vital to her healing. Being sick does not mean she can't call me."

"Except it kind of does. With the feeling like shit you'll get maybe a minute of conversation before she either falls asleep or feels so bad she's going to hang up on you. That probably would have meant a phone hand off to me which would have led us right back to this circular conversation,"he turned the heat down on the soup making his way down the hall to check on Jen.

"No." She says. "She'd have called. It's the sense of responsibility. A five second, 'I am sick' would suffice." She holds off on anything else she wanted to say, trying to see if Alex understands her point.

Alex was just getting more frustrated. The week had been hard and while things with Gibbs and Heather had been approved it was still awkward at times. All the while keeping things moving Alex had worried about Jen especially considering their child already had health issues in the womb and the pregnancy had been anything but easy. To add icing to the cake Jen had gotten sick, setting his nerves even further on edge.

He stepped into the bedroom quietly.

Davis suddenly wonders if Alex thinks that she doesn't believe him. It's not about that, but about Jenny's responsibility. Actually, her frustrations have nothing to do with him. But, if he doesn't understand that, they won't be getting anywhere.

Alex made his way over to the bed, honestly he hated the thought of waking her but he needed Jen take over for a minute. He knew it was about time to get her to eat something anyway. He gently rubbed his hand over her shoulder trying to wake her gently.

"Hold on one moment Doctor."

Davis sighs a bit. This wasn't her point. But whatever.

Jen rolls a bit and looks up at Alex through groggy eyes. "What?" she croaks quietly.
