Truth be told,I've seen some really strong candidate get rejected, while people with really terrible English skills and guys who were clearly only in it for the prospect of Japanese girls get in. Who JET accepts seems very much to depend on what mood the interviewers are in. Don't forget about Korea! One of the people I met last year did EPIK (the Korean govt's JET) http://www.epik.go.kr/ and really enjoyed it.
I will not expect you to muster joy if that happens. If it does, try not to let it get to you. I won't rub it in your face. I'm a Japanese major and they would probably put me in the middle of nowhere where nobody speaks English because I've already been in the middle of nowhere Japan. Just like grad school, many people apply and many people are qualified and sometimes it just depends on the flip of a coin. And if it does end up that way, you'll have a great opportunity to visit and a place to stay if you ever decide to go over an interview or visit me in Japan. Same goes for if it ends up with you. Or even better if it turns out for the both of us =)
