Sad news today in the musical world. Hilly Kristal, the founder of the legendary CBGB's, has died. He lost his fight with lung cancer.

I made it to CBGB's once. I was in NYC working in the Brooklyn Naval Yard at a power generating station. This was back in '99-'00. Got off the job, went back to the hotel, called a cab, and went into the city to CBGB's. A bunch of bands were playing that I never heard of. The only band name I can remember was Van Gogh's Radio. The place was dark, dingy, grimey, littered with stickers, but you could feel the history. Television, Talking Heads, the Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith. I tried to imagine the place packed out with those bands on stage back in the 70s. These two Brits walked up to me and started asking me about things to do in NYC. I told them I was a tourist too. They said I looked like I was from NYC. Must of been the grey p-coat I was wearing, which has sadly abandoned me. Hope it's found a good home.

I watched most the bands. Picked up a flyer on the way out as a momento, and walked around the area for a while. Grabbed a slice of pizza at a walk up pizzeria. Just took in the city. The swarms of taxi cabs.

So, that's my memory of CBGB's and NYC for that matter. Rest in peace Mr. Kristal and CBGB's. Thanks for memories.
