I got quite a bit of reading completed on my trip, as you can see! The 20-24 were all read during the trip, whether waiting in the airport or while I was on the trains. I forgot to bring my Nook charger during the days I was out traveling the English countryside, but luckily our hostel had one that would fit! It is impossible for me to not read while I'm traveling. It was a good bunch of books this time, hooray!
- Gosh, I loved Scarlet. I was underwhelmed by Cinder when I first read it last year, but I might have to do a re-read and re-think my opinions on it now that Scarlet has captured my heart. Am I going to write Scarlet/Wolf fic? PROBABLY. I desperately need more books in this vein. Cyborg space fairy tales ftw.
- Bleeeeeh, The Eternal Ones. I knew this one was going to be a dud when I first got it due to some reviews I'd seen of it before, but I adore Kristen Miller's Kiki Strike series, so I hoped it would have some of the same magic. And I was toooootally wrong. Holy circular plots and braindead protagonists, Batman! I was less ragey about this book being a total dud, probably because I know Miller can write some fantastic stuff, but I would not recommend it to anyone.
- One of the girls at work suggested I read Partials series and oh my god, what a good decision that was. Partials is the first YA dystopian series I've started this year that didn't cop out on the world building and explained things in a sensible manner, actually dealt with and discussed some of the political and moral complications of said dystopian world, didn't have romance as the A plot, had a huge cast of PoC characters (one of whom was the protagonist, Kira, plus BAMF Heron and Marcus) and an awesome network of well-developed secondary characters, and I just couldn't put this book down.
The sequel, Fragments, kind of fumbled with the journey-in-the-wilderness trope, but it was done in a way that I was totally interested in? I love reading about the destruction and decay of cities and civilization, so I didn't find these parts as boring as I usually do because there was details to consume. Highly recommend and am eagerly anticipating the third book next year.
- Continuing to love the Parasol Protectorate series. It just keeps getting better and better, which is all I ask for in a book series. I bought the last two last week, so I'll probably have the series finished by the end of the month. Sad day.
- But there is hope! Etiquette and Espionage is the YA prequel series for the Parasol Protectorate with a few appearances by side characters from the main series. Found the soft cover version of it in England and bought it with no hesitation (I don't think it surprises anyone that I came back with three more books than I left with.) I liked Etiquette and Espionage, but it lacked some of the flair and flavor of the adult series. I'm hoping the sequels will rectify that.
- Both Shelly Laurenston books were good. It took me longer than usual to get into The Mane Attraction, but it was still pretty good in the end. Just got an e-copy of her newest book, so I'll get around to reading that soon.
Currently reading: The Iron Duke by Meljean Brook. It's another steampunk romance and it's fairly good so far. Too bad the Iron Duke is turning out to be a douchey Alpha Male. I'm also reading Day of Doom, the last book in the Cahills and Vespers series. I should've finished it ages ago, but I've been ignoring it in favor of other shiny things.
Up next: Still need to read Requiem by Lauren Oliver, so I'll get around to that ASAP. Insurgent also came in at the library this week. Otherwise, I still have a giant stack of books that I just keep adding to to get through. There's not a lot of books coming out this month that I want to buy, so maybe I'll be able to get through a good chunk of them without immediately replacing one I just read with a new book.
Pffft, like that'll happen. My name is
greenconverses and I have a book buying addiction.
