“What are you wearing?”

Nico likes to think of himself as a tolerant, progressive man of the 21st century, he really does, but sometimes the tiny part of his consciousness that remembers growing up in the 1930s likes to rear its ugly head and speak up quite loudly. Like when his girlfriend’s Halloween costume seems to consist of nothing but sheer black panties and bra.

And a garter belt. Oh boy, a garter belt. She is so not going out in public in that, no matter how much she complains about him being a cave man.

“My underwear?” Rachel replies, as she props her foot on the bed and rolls a stocking up her leg. Nico’s throat bobs as she clips the belt to the top of the stocking, her hands skimming the soft flesh of the inside of her thigh. “You act like you’ve never seen it before.”

Nico is pretty sure this is a new set of underwear (her other black bra doesn’t make her breasts swell quite as much), so really, he hasn’t seen it before now. But that doesn’t mean he wants to rest of the world to see it too.

“That’s not your costume, is it?”

“No, dummy,” she replies, rolling her eyes. She nods her head to the sparkling red dress hanging off the corner of the door. “I told you weeks ago. I’m going as Jessica Rabbit for Halloween.”

Nico’s relief is somewhat short lived. Somehow, Rachel parading around at the bars as a sultry pin-up in the low-cut dress seems even worse than her in just the lingerie.

“Well, that makes me feel so much better,” he mutters, leaning against the bedpost.

Rachel grins and sets her foot down, patting his shoulder as she saunters past him to pull the dress off the hanger. Nico turns his head, admiring the curves of her bottom.

“Good thing I’m not dressing up just for you then,” she says, bypassing the dress and reaching for a shopping bag on the closet’s top shelf. “Where’s your costume anyway? Or are you going as yourself again?”

Nico hasn’t dressed up on a Halloween since he was eleven, and he usually finds an excuse to avoid the holiday altogether. He can’t help but feel like the universe is mocking him on Halloween, with the silly mortals running around in skeleton, zombie and demon costumes, revealing in the creepy and unusual. They wouldn’t find it so fun if macabre was what they had to live with every day.

He’d tolerate it for Rachel’s sake. But there was no way he was dressing up.

“It’s a bit cliche for a son of Hades to dress up on Halloween, don’t you think?” Nico says, a bit of a whine to his voice.

“Maybe if you’re dressing as the grim reaper or a ghost or something,” Rachel says, pulling something white and fluffy out of the bag as she approaches him. “But I need a Roger to my Jessica… ”

Nico groans. “Don’t you even think - ”

Quick as a flash, Rachel has placed a pair of floppy bunny ears on his head and a wide grin splits across her face.

“Aw, you’d look perfect if you’d just stop scowling.”

Nico doesn’t even want to think about how undignified he looks right now, but Rachel’s radiant with glee and he doesn’t want to spoil that, especially if that means he can’t ogle her in her dress without feeling guity.

“You’re lucky I like you, Dare,” he mutters, hooking his arm around his waist and dipping his fingers in the hallow of her bare back. “So very lucky.”
