Wow. WHAT a gorgeous weekend. Never seen the weather that perfect.
Friday night, I helped Twink and Yoric pack up the car for sleeping over at friend Tim's (thanks Tim!) who lives a good sneeze away from grounds. I washed clothes and gathered food, Twink sewed madly, and Yoric hauled. They went on, and I went to Woodbury to sleep as I had Brynna's wedding in the morning. I managed to find some shoes on sale for my dress, I treated myself to a pedicure and manicure, hemmed Mom's silk pants and we were off.
The reception was lovely, held at my grandparent's River House on the St. Croix. The Stillwater trolleys were there to take us down the 1/2 mile hill to the house where there was tent big enough to house the Ringling Brother's set up. The caterers had a BIG barbeque set off to the side, and there was a dance floor set up in the middle. It's not the flattest of space, so there was a bit of an odd slope to the festivities.
Brynna and Brian made a grand entrance under the drawn sabers of Brain's Marine squad? troop? Brynna was ritually thwapped with a sword and the party began. I tried to be useful and carted things when I could and found people and herded for pictures and such. Then I went for a BIG swing on the swing set and felt oddly grounded, so I went and socialized. Mom sat us down with her cousins and Grandma, so I did some food fetching. Good food! HUGE steak, like, covering half the plate, peppers and 'taters. Mmm.
Prettiest privies I've ever seen, too. The River House has one little bathroom, so they wisely rented some porta-johns and prettied them up - gold-framed mirror on the inside of the door, hanging wall vase with little violet bouquet, heart-shaped soaps, and candles. They smelled perfectly acceptable the whole night.
I found the reception oddly traditional, which I didn't think my cousin was - she had a 1st dance, a dance with her father and threw the bouquet (I made sure I was out of its path). It conveniently split in 3 in the air, so the joy was spread around. Odd song choices too - who plays "Picture" by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow at a wedding?? Some adults showed off their ignorance of karaoke, and they played "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and my Mom danced! I've NEVER seen her dance! She's really good! Very uninhibited.
Home to Woodbury, where I decided to sleep and head out to Fest the next morning. I was on site at 7, dressed 15 minutes later, and helping at Cottage shortly after. Twink, Yoric and Tim arrived about 8:30, breakfast was had (yum hearth-cooking), I was coffee-d we slathered ourselves with sunscreen (poor Twink's ta-tas were roasted) and we were off. Twink needed some buttons sewed on her Catskills tighter, Yoric needed to know how to wash his, and both wanted to know what kind I want. I've resisted because they're really expensive and I don't think I'd wear them enough to warrant the price. But I'm working on a character - a French merchant-class lady, so I could bring Rosie out to Fest with me. I think they're a shocking shortage of animals on site - I don't think any of the nobles have any, and courts should have big packs of dogs - wolfhounds and greyhounds, and lap dogs and falcons. I might even be able to get some people to play with me and carry Rosie around. Need to find her a small leather harness - pink nylon just isn't times...
Then we went to Oolu glass as my bodice-cooler leaped out of my bodice and shattered - I'm getting one I can put a leather thong through so it'll be more securely attached. My bosom isn't enough to keep it all squashed in and safe.
Saw Dip's riddle ("A plague on both your houses!") then met a new both - Wench Wear? It's just inside from the Bear Stage. The Bear is gone for he moment as it's been split pretty badly - they're trying to get it repaired. Someone installed a big Styrofoam bear-shaped cut-out that said, "Insert Bear here." On the programs, the stage is the "Bare" stage. I hope they can repair it. Anyway, the new proprietress was a very friendly lady - although the thinnest woman I've ever seen - her bones were sticking out. Apparently, she's got a metabolism like a hummingbird's. Cute clothes too - pantaloons with matching skirt for gypsy-type wear. Fun fabric, though not very time, in my opinion. She's from AZ and does the festival down there, and was thrilled to get a chance to come do ours. I hope we make her feel welcome.
Stopped in to oggle the pretties at the Pewter shop - I want that silverware! - and then we had to head back for a shift on fence. Twink got her new ball sexed - and it was a definite maybe. We're going with female, so Twink's named her Charity. Charity Ball. :) Getting used to doing fence - you answer the same questions over and over - what is it, what's its name, how old is it, etc.
Caught part of 10 Seconds of Harmony's show, had spinach pie, did Parade and more fence, had dinner at the Bakery stage, hauled wood for the Paninis, socialized with some guards and Twig, stopped in at Hidden Images, then went to Wondrous Works of Wood for a "whiskey loss prevention system;" Twink needed a new cork for her flask. Hanging out with them is a hoot. Cannon went off, I changed into jeans (huzzah bifurcated garments!), washed animal pens, gathered our gear, got it in the car, then Twink and I drove to Tim's, dropped off his gear, picked up ours, dropped him back at site for socializing, the Twink and I went home. Yoric gave a ride to some friends, so Twink sponged off and collapsed for some much-needed sleep. Yoric and I showered, then collapsed ourselves.
A very satisfying weekend.
Although I was WIPED OUT at work Monday. Think I'll stick to doing Saturdays and have recovery on Sunday.
fest,
