Jackson Rathbone, who plays Jasper in the Twilight films, is more optimistic about the globalisation of movies. He told The Advertiser the trend was a reflection of the modern, connected world. "I think art in general is going to become more global-orientated," he said. "Art has to respond to the times."
But Rathbone also discovered the hard way how difficult it is to make films that play well in every culture.
English audiences laughed themselves hoarse during his new blockbuster The Last Airbender - in the UK "bender" is slang for homosexual. That gave an unintended meaning to lines like: "I could tell at once that you were a bender." "I didn't know about it while I was making the film but in England I found out about that pretty quick!" he laughed.
