I just saw the movie "Predators" in which every character, snatched from all corners of the globe, spoke English- and it wasn't a plot-hole.

All of those people would have been at least mutually intelligible.   That's been my experience throughout the world:  Everyone speaks English.

Or, as Isaac Asimov would have us say, Terran Basic/SQUEEE WE LIVE IN THE FUTURE!
