What I have grown to really like about Tim as a character (and by extension, the FNL writing staff) is that instead of just shoving his issues in our face (abandoned by his parents, incapable of dealing with responsibility, drinking problem, etc.) and expecting us to sympathize with him and like him, he shows us his issues--and then does something about them. And not in big ways and not always successfully, but at least he has a growing level of self-awareness and is fumbling around trying to be a better person.
I love it (as a viewer) that he fails; most of us do, frequently. I love it that he can't catch a break; most of us can't. But I really love that the show doesn't just parade his issues in front of us and expect us to fall in love with him BECAUSE of them. Tim is the kind of character--the complicated, screwed-up, sensitive bad boy--that I usually loathe; actually, ditto for Dean Winchester. But I like both of them because they know how messed up they are, they don't expect anyone to cut them any slack for it, and they know they need to change to have some kind of a future.
