When I was younger, one of my favorite holiday movies was the 1957 version of The Snow Queen. Today, feeling nostalgic again, I not only looked up the film on youtube, but also looked into the original story on wiki. So I decided to see if I could make a disney verse story out of it! A story summary, let's see what happens.
Once upon a time, there was a noble angel (scrooge) and a beautiful demon (magica), and they had a secret affair from their masters. Every day, the demon would admire her reflection in a mirror, noting how gorgeous she was. However, the angel eventually broke off the affair, fearing the punishment that would dare to come his love if their masters found out. Misunderstanding, the demon became enraged, and made her heart as cold as ice. She cursed her mirror, and shattered it to pieces - should those pieces ever enter another soul, that person would only see the badness and ugliness in everything. She became the Snow Queen, a wicked woman who ruled over a land of ice.
Grandmother quietly turned the page, but her granddaughter interrupted the motion, crying so softly that it would have been drowned out by the winds outside, had not her relative a sensitive ear. "Oh, please don't tell that story again." said the granddaughter, shaking her head. "It's so sad... I don't know what I'd do if someone I loved didn't love me back."
Years later, in a simple fishing town, fall is ending and winter is soon to come. Mickey and Minnie have lived next door for almost their entire lives, having a beautiful terrace garden that connected their homes. Though they are deeply in love with one another, they have yet to admit it, worried what that might do to their friendship. As Minnie's grandmother waves the tale of the Snow Queen, Mickey merely laughs at it, saying if he ever saw such a woman, he could just melt her on the stove. But for anytime her mentioned, the Queen can see the speaker in her mirror, and not only is angered by the insult, but terribly jealous of the love the mice have for one another. Fall ends, and winter comes upon the land, with Minnie making sure to protect the flowers they grew together, especially their roses.
"Aw, Min, don't tell me you're scared of a fairy tale!" He laughed, shaking his head in disbelief. "Even if she was real, ya know what I'd do?" Without waiting for a reply, he took her hand, and led her to the warm kitchen, gesturing to the meals cooking over the small stove. "I'd melt her right over the stove! Make her into a big puddle on the floor!" Rewarded with hearing Minnie's small giggles, he placed a hand between her ears, petting her fondly. "And I'd protect ya. Ya know that." She did know that.
With Christmas fast approaching, Mickey goes to the marketplace to try and find a good gift for Minnie, something that says how he really feels about her. Out of seemingly nowhere, a snowstorm strikes the town, and the enchanted glass shards are blown into Mickey's eyes and heart. When he recovers, he finds that he cares for nothing and no one, selfishly wasting his hard earned money, and treating Minnie cruelly. Minnie is heartbroken, but keeps trying to be his friend and find out what's wrong, only to be continued to be abused and ignored. A second snowstorm strikes the town as Minnie yet again confronts Mickey, and the Snow Queen arrives in a ice chariot, offering to take Mickey away to her kingdom, where he can always be rich, powerful, immortal, etc. Mickey willingly gets on the chariot to ride away, ignoring Minnie's cries, though his chest aches for reasons he can't explain.
Though he cried out, he could not hear his voice, with the winds deafening all noise, nor could he even feel his mouth had moved, for the cold was numbing his nerves. Yet there was a pain, and it struck his eyes, and it struck his heart, but this injury was not a physical pierce. It was something much deeper he could not explain, an overwhelming darkness that was blinding him, his mind screaming into silence. Collapsing into the snow, unable to fight the invasion, he accepted what was to become of him. There was nothing more to be done.
When the snowstorm leaves, Minnie tries to tell her friends and family what happened, but no one believes her. Determined to save him, she sneaks out of her house, takes out two roses she and Mickey planed, putting them in her hair as a reminder of their bond, and steals a small boat. The water only takes her once she gives it an offering of her little shoes. At first, it's a steady trip in the water, but eventually the boat is caught by a shore made out of sharp rocks and ropes. Getting off the boat, Minnie is greeted by a noble sorcerer who lives alone (Mortimer), who offers her shelter. She notices he has a strange collection of haunting looking dolls, and learns that with the tea he serves and when he touches her hair, he is trying to erase her memory to make her stay there forever.
She settled into the plush seat, licking her lips after each sip of tea, relishing the mix of honey and sugar. "This is delicious." Se remarked, when the cup was half empty. "I can't remember the last time I had something so yummy!"
"How about that." Mortimer grinned, that statement oddly seeming to give him a great pleasure. He resumed brushing her hair, only pausing to begin taking the flowers out of her hair. "Let me get rid of these for you..."
All at once, she stopped, jerking her head up. The roses!
The roses in her hair manage to remind her who she is and why she's there, and with help from some of the dolls, learns Mortimer set the shore like that on purpose to trap people there, and when he's done/bored with his guests, he turns them into dolls. She manages to trick him into getting trapped in his own toy closet, and breaks the spell over all the dolls, freeing their souls so they can rest in peace. Only one doll remains unchanged, an unhappy older man, and Minnie decides to take it with her. The boat has been smashed to pieces, so the rest of her journey is on foot. During the journey, she finds a raven with an injured wing (Poe), and when she gives it aide, he tells her her has seen a boy matching Mickey's description in the next kingdom. Poe says his lady love is a pet within the kingdom's castle, and he wishes to see her again, but the haughty princess won't allow a 'dirty animal' within it.
"I don't know the boy's name." Poe admitted, now perched upon Minnie's shoulder. "But the word is that he is very kind, and very handsome, while a bit on the small side."
Her eyes widened, and she suddenly began to run, startling the bird almost hard enough to knock him over. "That must be Mickey!" For, in her biased eyes of love, what other boy could be famous for being so handsome and so kind? "I have to get to him!"
Meanwhile, with Mickey, he's arrived in a gigantic kingdom made of ice. Magica kisses each of his cheeks - the first kiss turns his heart to ice, and the second kiss makes him forget who he is and his home, telling him a third kiss would kill him. Mickey forgets what it's like to feel many emotions, and Magica gives him a challenge. If he can take special icicles and spell out 'eternity', then he is free to go. Since he cares about nothing else anymore, all he does with his time is try and make the word. Every so often, he feels a great pain in his heart, but he doesn't know why.
He knelt down, inspecting the puzzle before him. For every way he twisted one icicle, another would change, and the pattern would be disrupted once again. No words came from his mouth, no emotion ever stirred him to change his path. All he did was sit there and play with the puzzle, never noticing hunger, exhaustion, cold, nothing mattered but to play the puzzle. Yet, even as he lost every sense and every nerve, the pain deep in his heart still throbbed, refusing to be ignored, to be forgotten. It was eternal, as was this game.
Hoping to find Mickey, Minnie agrees to help get Poe within the castle, by sneaking in with chefs and food, as the princess is apparently holding another grand party. They sneak around the castle, and find the room the 'captured boy' is in, but when Minnie goes in, it's not Mickey - it's Donald! The princess (Daisy) catches them, and assumes they are trying to take Donald away, so she orders them to go the dungeon. Poe flies away before he can be caught, and finds his girl, sliding into her gilded cage and refusing to leave. Minnie explains why Poe was trying to get in so badly, and Daisy decides to show mercy, and gives Minnie shelter for the night. That night, Daisy confides to Minnie exactly why Donald is there.
"That's not Mickey!" She cried, drawing back, aghast in her mistake. The duck merely stared at the strangers, unsure of what to make of her sudden distress. Minnie turned to Poe, demanding an explanation. "You said it was a small, handsome boy! That's not him!"
Poe shrugged, giving a small tilt of his head. "They do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
The duck crossed his arms, temper rising. "You break in and insult people? Is this a new type of burglary?!"
It seems a while ago, while Daisy was out and about in her kingdom, a group of thugs attacked her. Donald came to her rescue, giving her aide without even knowing who she was/how important she was. Since then, Daisy has tried to keep him in her castle with great parties and gifts, since she fell in love with him and wants him to stay with her, but she still doesn't know if her feelings are returned, asking Minnie's advice. Minnie says she just simply tell Donald her feelings - and with that, realizes that's what she should have done with Mickey in the first place. Daisy confesses to Donald, and to great joy, he returns her feelings. Minnie then explains her entire journey, and Daisy, wrapped up in such a great tale of romance, decides she and Donald will help the poor dear.
"How could he ever love me?" The princess buried her face in her hands, tears running through her fingers. "We're from two different worlds... I don't know how to make him happy.... but I love him so much..." Each confession came with a choke, not knowing how to handle these strange emotions. Yet they came to a quiet standstill, as Minnie's arms carefully came around her, holding her in a gentle embrace. Black fingers wiped away the tears, and the new friend's soft coos calmed the quivering heart, assuring her that aide would be given.
After redressing Minnie up in fanciness, the trio takes a golden carriage, beginning to ride off in search of Mickey. During the travel, they are attacked by a gang of thieves, and the trio are put into cages. One of the thieves, Goofy, wants to keep Minnie as a pet of sorts, since 'pets' are the only things willing to be his friends. Minnie says her story once more, and Goofy, touched, sets her and the ducks free. His pet deer actually knows the way to the snow kingdom, and so they sneak away from the thieves, heading towards the kingdom. The Snow Queen sets out many monsters and traps to try and stop them, but they friends work together to defeat them, and break right into the ice palace.
"None of us are real friends." The dog admitted, settling down next to Minnie. "Just the way it is... only supposed to hang around those that can get ya what ya need. None of 'em like me... they just like that I can talk to the animals. Sometimes makes the job easier. But I need aint gold or carriages, none of that... what I need, they can't get me... I... I need friends. More than anythin' in this whole wide world, I need friends... think most everyone does."
They find Mickey still working on that puzzle, looking tired and cold. Minnie, just overjoyed to simply see him, runs to him, and kisses him, crying in her happiness. Her tears undo the shard in his eyes, her kiss restores his heart, and when she confesses her love, it breaks the last of the spell on him, making him remember and care for her again. The Snow Queen arrives, and threatens to put the enchanted shards in all of them, saying that because Mickey hasn't spelled the word, he cannot leave. As the group scrambles to try and avoid the shards, Minnie sees them head for Mickey again, and nearly tackles him down, trying to take the blow for him. As they hold and try to protect one another, their impact manages to make the icicles form the word 'eternity', for that is their love.
Nothing mattered anymore, nothing but this moment, to hold him and never let go, her warm cheek pressed to his cold one. She sobbed hard, not caring if he was ready to cast her aside again, for what was most important was that he was alive. Her fingers dug into him, and her body shook with each cry, almost unable to breathe, oblivious to the change going on inside of Mickey. For as the tears fell from her face and onto his body, that great pain he had buried inside was lessening, more and more, melting into a happiness that defied words. As color began to return to him, his eyes cleared, trying in desperate vain to find the reason for this overwhelming sense of sheer joy welling up, causing his own tears to flow.
But the enchanted shards don't hit Minnie, and instead the doll she's been holding onto takes the blow. The doll turns into the angel - he too had been spelled by Mortimer and kept there, but when the spell was broken, he resisted the change back, as he was so heartbroken over what he had done to his love that he felt he did not deserve to be free. After watching all that Minnie has gone through, he asks for a second chance, willing to defy God and Satan to be with the Queen again. With her heart finally healed, the Queen relents, and the two vanish, leaving her entire kingdom to melt, and spring has arrived. The gang returns home to live happy ever after.
