I bought two Bamboo Saxophones in Shanghai.
I have this thing with musical instruments sometimes. Every time I see one, I want it. I'm not talking expensive Long & McQuade new and shiny stuff, but the second hand, obscure, petite instrument that often goes unnoticed. There's something attractive about a piece of wood or ceramic that can toot a nice note or pluck a deep cord. 99% of the time I just dream and window shop, but this Chinese man blowing away on the streets of Shanghai caught me with his charismatic playing.
After haggling down the price, via friend-interpreter, I ended up with two of these things.
TWO!
Why in the world did I even want one? haha! I think I was just happy to have haggled for a discount, and they weren't even much to begin with. They're really nice - made from bamboo and painted with a lacquered finish and chinese symbols running down the sides. I don't even want to learn how to play them - urm...I think these are going in the "gift" category for friends.
Ohh and I saw REAL Big-type Bamboo tree things in Japan! They're soo cool. You've not lived till you've seen a forest of bamboo trees. Too big to make a saxophone - maybe Didgeridoo?? Nope, way too big.
I'm sticking with window shopping next time.
