Here's why:
-Cal is playing in the Holiday Bowl. Though playing in this lowly bowl is kind of disappointing considering the team's legitimate chances at the Rose Bowl in October and early November, it should actually be a pretty good game. Cal is ranked 20th right now and Texas A&M is 21st. I'm sick of seeing these 7-5 teams play in December... finally a good matchup. I'd be looking forward to this game even if Cal wasn't my favorite team.
-The Pac-10 basketball season begins. Cal vs. Arizona is a good way to start things off but I can't wait until the Wildcats play UCLA. I want to see the Bruins knocked out of that No.1 spot and if any team can do it, it's my Wildcats. Jan. 20th is so far away!
-The Big West basketball season starts. The Aggies aren't doing so hot, as usual, but oh well.
-Zito was traded to the Giants. Technically this happened late last night but it was too late for deadline. I can't decide how I feel about this. It'll be nice to still be able to see him pitch live and it's certainly better than the some other options (Yankees, Rangers), but... the Giants.... I don't know. It's not nearly as bad as Schmidt signing with the Dodgers, but going across the bay still seems like somewhat of a traitor move. On another note, I don't think Zito's worth what the Giants are giving him, and this is coming from a big Zito fan. It ties for the sixth largest overall deal in MLB history and the richest for a pitcher. Yet he's been pretty inconsistent ever since winning the Cy Young back in 2002. Statistically, last year was his best since '02 and he went 16-10 with an ERA of 3.83. I'd want him, but not for $126 million over seven years.
