i typed this to entertain a friend who is bored at work and thought i would share it... i intended for it to be a short cute story but it got away from me. it is the first thing that i have written in a long time. hope it doesn't suck. stupid fairy tales gettin away from me.
once upon a time there were two people who fought and bickered over everything. They argued for 30 years and no one could understand why they stayed around eachother. "well... i love her" the man would say when asked. "well... i love him" the woman would say when asked. And they would go back to their arguing. One day they were arguing about whether or not it was going to rain. "It will rain" said the woman. "no it won't, you stupid old bat". Suddenly the woman started to cry. "we've been arguing for years and you have never cried before" said the man. "i know" she replied "but it seems to me now that we have wasted what could have been a wonderful life and now we are getting old and we will die arguing, and i just can't stand it any more" Stunned, the man went over and put his arm around her " Sweetheart, you know i love you, please stop crying and we'll work it out." " I can't, I wish i could but i can't." she replied.
The old man worried for a seven days while his wife cried. Finally he said to himself "I've got to do something about this. She is going to die of a broken heart if she doesn't stop crying. "
he packed a few belongings and told her to wait at home.
The old man started out and asked the neighbors as he went "My wife has been crying for a week and she can't stop. Do you know of anything that can help her?"
The neighbors all said "we told you about all of that fighting and now you are both paying the price" and they wouldn't help him. The old man stooped his shoulders and kept walking, asking everyone he met and getting the same response.
Much later he was getting tired and he stopped at a stream to get a drink of water and to think what to do next. In a clearing by the stream he saw a little hut and walked over to it. moss and vines covered the walls and the door was open. He could hear the sounds of a woman singing sweetly and he smelled baking bread.
he stood at the door and called "lady, can i please come in and sit. i am tired and need to rest."
A beautiful young woman came to the door and said "oh you poor dear man. come in and take your rest with me. i was just about to have lunch. Will you dine with me."
"Thank you dear lady" he said gratefully.
as they dined the woman asked why he looked so sad. "I've done a terrible thing... my wife and i have fought about everything for 30 years and now she is crying and can't stop. "
"I have just the thing for that ... i will help you when we are done eating. Don't worry anymore. Your wife will be fine in no time." The man smiled and finished his lunch.
later the woman got out a beautiful crystal bottle that was small and fragile looking. "You cry three tears into this bottle and i will mix some things in it and you will take it home and pour it into a glass of wine for your wife to drink and she will stop. Only you must never make her cry again or she will die. Can you promise me that?" The man thought long and hard and said "if i don't do it then she will surely die anyway. i promise."
"Good. then lets begin" The old man wondered how he was going to make himself cry and they tried everything that they could think of... she sang him sad songs and told him sad stories and nothing worked. Finally as it was getting dark the woman said "i didn't want to have to resort to this but nothing else is working. if your wife dies from crying you will have to live the rest of your life without her. you will never see her face again and you will live without her love."
The man started to cry and the woman caught the tears in the bottle. he continued to cry while she worked, mixing a potion to help his poor wife. Now go... it is dark and your wife will be worried. The man rushed home and found his wife on the bed still crying. "I am home love. I have brought something to heal you. " he poured the wine, mixed in the potion and gave it to her. "Drink this it will help" Between sobs his wife drank and he told her the story of the beautiful woman who had helped him and the promise that he had made. As she neared the bottom of the glass her crying eased and she looked calm. The went to to bed and slept peacefully in eachother's arms.
The next morning the man made his way into the woods to thank the dear lady who had helped him but the cottage was gone. on the ground he saw something shining, he went closer and found two perfectly matched diamonds. he went back into town and had them made into rings .... one for each of them to remind them of the promise. His wife's eyes got big when he showed her what he had brought and told her of the missing cottage. "she was our guardian spirit." the wife said "to stop us from fighting, and now she has left us this gift."
Many many years later they were lying in bed, old and tired but happy with their lives. The hands that wore the rings entertwined. above their bed the beautiful lady appeared to them. "come with me" the lady said "i am no ordinary woman. I am the goddess of true love and i have come to take you home". The old couple looked at one another and smiled. "I love you" said the man. "and i you" said the wife. And with that they closed their eyes and followed the goddess home. The end.
