By the time this is read, most of you will probably already know that
Rosa Parks has passed on. I have been reading the Zinn Reader recently, and the first section of the book covers the civil rights era. The Zinn Reader is a collection of essays and articles that Howard Zinn wrote at the time about what he saw and experienced. I am humbled and astounded at the bravery of those who fought for equality.
I took a Civil Rights Movement class in college, one of the more eye-opening classes that I had at the University of Utah.
We were very fortunate in that class that year to be visited by Ms. Parks herself, something I will never forget. That was in early 1992, only a couple of months before the LA riots, which showed how much work there still is to do to ensure racial equality in our country.
I could only wish to be as courageous and steadfast as Rosa Parks and so many others in the pursuit of social justice. I hope some day I will be.
