Okura tilted his head as he stared at the cookie in his hand.
It was round shaped and dark, probably made with cacao. Or syrup. Something sweet, however, that was for sure.
Slowly, he brought it closer to his face and smelled it. It was just normal, smelling like a cookie.
Frowning, Okura looked at the small package on the bed next to him.
It had been lying on the floor next to the bin and Okura really wondered why Ryo had thrown them there.
He took a small bite and slowly chewed on it, then his face lit up and a foolish smile spread across his face.
“So delicious”, he murmured and took another bite, a bigger one this time.
Okura really couldn’t think of any reason why Ryo would have thrown these away, they were just so very perfect.
Crispy and tasting of sugar, chocolate and lots of butter, he couldn’t think of any better mixture for a cookie.
Happily, he ate another one and leaned back on his bed, staring up at the ceiling, luffing his feet that were hanging from the edge of the bed.
That was how Ryo found him, as he came into the room and closed the door behind himself.
“What are you doing?” He looked over and it took him just a few seconds to realise the situation. “What are you doing”, he repeated immediately, angrier in his tone.
Okura lifted himself up on his elbows and with a cookie between his lips, he blinked at Ryo. “Why?”
“I didn’t allow you to eat those!”
“I just tasted them”, Okura answered calmly.
The raven-haired came over to his bed and lifted the small package, raising a brow. “You ate half of them!”
Swallowing the last bite down, Okura looked up. “Oh, true, indeed.”
“I didn’t allow you to eat them, did I?!”
“You threw them away”, Okura told him and sat up.
“Because they are not the way they’re supposed to be.” Ryo went over to the bin again and dropped the package.
“But they’re so delicious!” Okura hopped off of the bed and made his way over to Ryo.
“They are not.”
Okura blinked his eyes. “Did you make them?”
Ryo just shrugged a shoulder and turned.
“Oh my, you’re that talented in baking?” Okura followed and beamed at Ryo’s back. “You’re capable of making something this good?!”
“They’re not good, I told you”, the raven-haired just snapped at him and took a few steps away, making space between them. “They are not like I wanted them to be.”
Okura blinked, before he went back to his bed and sat down. “But they tasted pretty good.”
Ryo shrugged a shoulder. It actually made him quite happy Okura liked those cookies. He had made so many attempts already and finding that someone really liked them meant he was close to getting a satisfying result.
“I’m going down, meeting with Pi and some others.”
“Ah”, Okura said. He accepted that Ryo didn’t want to talk about that any further. This conversation between them had lasted longer than any before. “Okay.”
“You want to join?”
He blinked his eyes at Ryo and tilted his head. “You want me to come with you?”
“Well…” Ryo shrugged a shoulder. He hated having to ask people for things or explaining his reasons. “I just asked.”
“I’ll go.”
Ryo didn’t answer that and just waited, while Okura got a few things together and pulled over another shirt. He watched him with an indifferent expression, as Okura pulled off the fabric.
He seriously was pretty slim. It wasn’t like Ryo was any better, but he was that slim because he actually had an eye on what he ate. Okura just stuffed everything into himself and he didn’t put on any weight at all.
Surprsingly, Ryo had to admit, as he watched Okura pulling over a yellowish shirt, it didn’t look unattractive at all.
With a gasp, Ryo suddenly turned.
What was he thinking? Where did his thoughts go? He really shouldn’t look at Okura in that way. He never had looked at any boy in that way.
“Are you okay”, Okura asked and Ryo turned with a slight smile, something he usually never did. Okura frowned at that.
“Of course”, Ryo just answered and opened the door. “Let’s go.”
He went out first and when Okura followed, the younger one just closed the door behind himself and went ahead.
“Hey, didn’t you forget something?”
Okura turned and looked at Ryo with a puzzled expression. He patted his pockets. “Everything’s there.”
Ryo gave him an angry glare, before he got out his key. “I told you to lock the door, didn’t I?”
“No one would go in, however.”
“But I feel uneasy, knowing it’s unlocked.”
Okura just rolled his eyes. “If it means that much to you, lock it.”
Ryo did exactly that and then, caught up on Okura. “You’re annoying.”
Lifting a brow, Okura walked on beside him silently. He didn’t think he’d have to answer anything like that. Ryo just expected him to, expected protest and this way, Okura wouldn’t give him a chance to start a fight.
Since it was aready the beginning of July, it was rather warm outside. Not many students stood inside these days.
Okura could see Tegoshi and Nagase over on the soccer field. They probably held some special training, as Tegoshi always requested to, ever since he had joined the arts class.
Okura had just heard of it, but apparently, Ohno gave those classes and there were actually some really talented kids at this school.
The arts club had not been an option for himself, however, as Okura wasn’t that talented. He had found that there’s nothing he’s really talented at. That’s why he had missed the deadline to sign in for a club and had been assigned to one that needed members.
Which had been, of course, the gardening club.
It could have been worse, indeed. Actually, being in the gardening club was quite practical for Okura. He didn’t have fixed dates to appear, they just made plans for who had to take care of watering the plants when.
He had been on schedule last week and everything had gone rather well. As long as no one was complaining it meant he hadn’t done anything wrong.
Okura had seriously thought about the cooking club, but rather than making the food, he tasted it, so he hadn’t been able to make a decision. Having someone take that from him and assign him to an activity had been quite comfortable.
“Tacchon, Ryo-kun!”
They both turned in the same moment and saw Masuda waving them over. He sat together with some other guys under one of the huge trees in the large school yard and it looked like they were playing something.
Ninomiya lay with his head in Ohno’s lap and was apparently sleeping, while Ohno had a book and a pen in his hand. Yamashita sat next to them, his eyes closed, too, as he was apparently listening to some music. Jin had a cup from the cafeteria and lay with sunglasses on streched out on a blanket that he shared with Uchi, who was involved in the card game he played with Masuda, Koyama and Nakamaru. Ueda was sitting a bit aside, reading in a book; he had glasses on.
“I’m winning”, Uchi announced, as they approached them.
Ryo shifted Jin’s leg with his foot to sit down on their blanket, too. Okura just sat down next to Masuda in the grass.
“Where’s Kame?” Okura looked around.
“He met up with Kimura this morning”, Ninomiya answered without opening his eyes. “They went to town together.”
Uchi snickered. “Kame got a crush on Kimura, huh? Should we tell him about the girlfriend?”
Koyama blinked his eyes. “Kimura-senpai has a girlfriend?”
“How do you know”, Nakamaru asked Uchi.
He shrugged a shoulder. “I found the photo, when we still shared a room last year.”
Jin rolled around now and put his cup to the blanket. He lowered his sunglasses and gave Uchi a keen look over their edge. “Is that for sure?”
The younger one laughed. “Why? Do you want to make her cheat on him?”
Jin raised a brow and smirked. “No, something much better.”
The others just frowned, as he shoved up his glasses again and took a sip from his coffee.
“Whatever”, Masuda said and shuffled the cards, after Uchi had made a last move and had won. “Another round?”
Okura joined their game and when they had almost ended the next round, Kazuya suddenly showed up.
Yamashita noticed him first and invited him to sit. “How was your date?”
Kazuya laughed slightly, as he made himself comfortable. “It wasn’t a date. We went shpopping.”
“Right”, Jin said, without moving. “I told you there’s nothing going on between those two.”
“Sure, and Massu trades Pokemon cards with the girl he always meets up”, Ryo commented on that.
Jin gave him an indignant look for that. Masuda did the same.
“Well”, Kazuya said and glanced at Jin for a moment, “If Jin thinks there’s nothing going on, then I might say… there probably is.”
Everyone laughed, but the look Jin gave Kazuya for that was rather clear.
“But it’s not about that”, Kazuya changed the topic quickly, as he turned his head. “There were posters put up everywhere for a festival.”
“Ah, that”, Nino said and streched. “I saw it, too. It’s all over the place.”
“When is it”, Yamashita wanted to know.
“Tonight.”
“Oh, great!” Koyama smiled at them. “All of us could go!”
“I’ll pass”, Jin just murmured.
“I already decided I’d go”, Kazuya told Koyama. “And Kimura-senpai is coming, too.”
“I want to go!”
Everyone gave Jin knowing looks, as he suddenly had raised his hand.
“What about you, Ohno-kun”, Koyama asked.
Ohno quickly looked at Nino, as to confirm what to do, then he nodded. “We’ll go, too.”
“I’ll go, as well”, Yamashita pointed out. “And I bet, you two are going, too.” He looked at Ryo and Okura.
“Festival foods”, Okura just purred.
Nakamaru used the distraction of everyone laughing to glance at Ueda.
He had been sitting silently for all the while, had read in his book. Ueda wasn’t the type to always be around people and yet, he had come along. And Nakamaru knew the reason.
Ueda just wanted to be close to him, have a reason to be in the same room, the same area, with the same people.
Now, he glanced back and for a moment, their looks locked.
They both thought the same, thought about that festival, where a few years ago, they had become a couple.
“Are you going, too”, Okura asked Nakamaru, nudging his shoulder.
Nakamaru turned his head away from Ueda and smiled. “Sure.”
“Okay, so all of us are going”, Kazuya confirmed and as no one opposed, he got up again. He waved into the crowd and then went off.
“Where exactly is he going?” Jin’s look followed Kazuya.
“He’ll dress up now”, Yamashita said mockingly.
“He has good reasons to”, Uchi added.
“Tonight is his chance, it seems.” Ryo seemed just as amused as the other two.
Jin narrowed his eyes, before he put on his sunglasses again and pretended to sleep without another word.
“Massu, can you help me quickly?”
Tegoshi turned and looked over his shoulder to see Masuda at the other side of the room. He pointed at his waist and the lossely tied obi of his yukata.
“I can’t get it done alone.”
Masuda gave him a short glance, before he walked over and tied it properly. They both didn’t say a word, while he did so.
Since the new term had started, they shared this room and first, Masuda had actually been pretty afraid of what Tegoshi could do. The younger one was capable of everything, Masuda knew that well enough.
In their first year, they had become friends, good friends. Tegoshi had been cute and innocent and he had been quickly attached to Masuda. A bit too quickly and a bit too attached.
Masuda watched Tegoshi’s back now, as he tied the fabric. He was a small and slim boy, but as Masuda knew that were just the looks. Tegoshi was strong-willed and open-minded and put everything to reach his aims.
And for more than two years Masuda had been one of those aims.
Tegoshi thought he was in love with Masuda, but the older boy knew better. He knew that between them there couldn’t be any kind of love. And as long as Tegoshi couldn’t accept that, Masuda was not ready to be his friend again.
Give him a finger and he takes the whole hand - that was how Tegoshi acted and Masuda couldn’t risk that.
“Will you bring her tonight?”
Masuda looked up, as Tegoshi suddenly broke the silence. His hands stopped for a second, before he finished the knot and turned away.
“I’ll meet her at the festival, yes.”
Tegoshi slowly turned to him. He actually looked pretty in his red yukata. He had even styled his hair. Masuda almost smiled at it, because that was just so typically Tegoshi.
He liked to dress up and when he did, he mostly looked prettier than any girl.
Masuda tried to erase that thought; he shouldn’t think of Tegoshi like that.
“How do you know about her?”
Tegoshi shrugged a shoulder. “Everyone suspects it. You often disappear.”
Masuda nodded. “Ah.”
“So… where did you get to know her?”
“That’s none of your business, Tegoshi-kun?”
Tegoshi lowered his look, apparently losing confidence. “I was just curious.”
Masuda gathered his things and went over to the door. “I’ll leave first. We’ll probably meet at the festival then.”
Tegoshi only nodded and sent Masuda off with a wave of his hand. He stood in his spot for a little longer, after Masuda had left and sighed then.
He wasn’t quite sure why, but apparently Masuda didn’t believe at all in any word Tegoshi said. It even seemed ridiculous to him that Tegoshi could feel anything for him.
He really didn’t get why, because after all, he had made it obvious in so many ways already that he liked Masuda.
Okay, it had probably gone too far, when he had sneaked into Masuda’s bed one night. But Tegoshi had learned his lesson from being kicked out of it and yelled at, hadn’t he?
With another sigh, he grabbed his things, too. He had thought he was lucky for being paired up in a room with Masuda, but looking at it now, he had not been lucky at all. He just got more and more unhappy in the present situation - and apparently, Masuda wasn’t happy sharing a room with Tegoshi, either.
But, for Tegoshi it got harder with each passing day. He was so close to the one he loved, he could watch Masuda’s sleeping face each night, was around him everyday.
And yet, there was nothing he could do, nothing to still that longing feeling inside his chest.
Telling himself to hold back once again, just like he did every so often, Tegoshi left the room to go and knocked the door across from theirs. Kazuya opened with a smile and waved Tegoshi inside.
“We’re almost done.”
Nino turned and greeted Tegoshi shortly, checking his reflexion in the mirror once more. “I’ll go and pick up Satoshi. We’ll meet downstairs, okay?”
He left and Kazuya looked at Tegoshi. “That’s a nice yukata.”
Tegoshi grinned. “I’ve been waiting to have a chance to wear it!”
Kazuya laughed slightly. Tegoshi was girly in more than one aspect.
They left together and picked up Yamashita and Aiba on their way. Aiba wore a yukata, too and he and Tegoshi got all excited over their outfits, before they went ahead to get all the others.
They gathered in the entrance hall, before they left to go to the town. From far, they could already see the lights and hear bits of the traditional music playing.
“Where is Massu?” Nakamaru looked around, walking beside Subaru.
“He wanted to pick up his girlfriend”, Tegoshi explained.
Okura gave him a worried look. Everyone knew how he felt about Massu and somehow, Okura could only pity him. “So, he’s not coming with us?”
“He said we may meet at the festival.”
“Girls are not allowed tonight”, Jin pointed out.
“You’re the last one to follow that”, Kimura reminded him and earned laughs for that.
Kazuya gave Kimura a questioning look. “Is Akanishi that much of a loose person?”
“I am not”, Jin interfered. “Don’t listen to any of these guys.”
Uchi and Ryo exchanged a look and both bit back a grin.
They reached the town and as soon as they entered the festival, they parted ways.
Koki and Okura stopped at a takoyaki store, ordering their first helpings.
Ryo looked at them for a bit and shook his head with a slight smile, before he competed in a game with Tegoshi.
“Hey, Nakamaru”, Yokoyama gripped his sleeve and pulled him to one of the stands with fans. “Let’s buy one.”
Nakamaru laughed at that and with Yokoyama, Taguchi and Uchi he decided for some fans.
“I want this one woith black and gold”, Yokoyama said and held one up, showing it off to the others.
“How about this?” Uchi had a light pink one, decorated with cherry blossoms.
“That’s pretty”, Nakamaru confirmed.
They all had quickly decided on their fans, until only Nakamru was left with a decision to make.
“I don’t know”, he said and frowned. “Probably this blue one?”
“That doesn’t suit you.”
“They’re all pretty.”
Nakamaru had just put one away, as someone suddenly shoved another one into his hand. He looked up and found Ueda next to himself.
“That one suits you.”
Nakamaru opened it up and saw a simple blue fan, patterned with violett florals. It wasn’t from the stand; it was an old, used one.
“That’s mine”, he said blankly.
Ueda shrugged. “You lend it to me back then and I never got around giving it back.”
Nakamaru looked at him for a moment, then Ueda just turned and walked off.
“Did you guys know each other before?” Yokoyama didn’t hesitate to ask.
“Somehow”, Nakamaru answered. He kept staring at the point Ueda had just diappeared from, before he turned. “Sorry, I’ll be back later.”
Nakamaru quickly followed Ueda and found the younger one sitting on a bench, all alone and watching other people playing games. Slowly, Nakamaru approached him and sat down next to Ueda.
“You kept it all this time”, Nakamaru simply said.
“I have a pullover and a pen, too. And some books. I’m sorry I didn’t give them back, before I left.” Ueda didn’t look up or turned to Nakamaru. He kept staring at the people playing games in the stalls.
“You would have had to explain yourself, if you had given all of it back.”
“I brought them. If you still want them back.” Ueda put his hands together in his lap. His hair slightly moved in the gentle breeze.
He still was the prettiest crature Nakamaru had ever seen. He sighed and held out the fan. “You can keep this, too.”
Ueda looked at him now and slowly took the fan. “Are you…”
“I don’t want anything back from you. I don’t miss those things.” Nakamaru got up and turned.
“Yuichi”, Ueda just said quietly, and even though the music was loud, Nakamaru could hear that low voice and it made him stop.
Ueda approached him and gently gripped his hand, holding on to it. “That’s not like you. You’re a kind person, you’re not acting so cold.”
Nakamaru closed his eyes for a second to gather himself. He didn’t pull away; Ueda’s hand was warm and it felt familiar. He couldn’t push himself to let go.
“You know”, he said and turned to look at Ueda. His eyes were dark and didn’t tell a thing, as they always were. It was impossible to read Ueda’s mind. “What is it you want?”
“Just some time to explain”, Ueda answered immediately.
“And then? Do you expect me to forgive you and everything’s going to be the way it used to be?”
As Nakamaru wanted to turn and walk away, Ueda tightened his grip and held him back. “I’m going to marry.”
Nakamaru froze; his hand in Ueda’s went limp. He didn’t even dare turning.
“They found out about us”, Ueda quickly continued. He knew if he didn’t say it all now, he’d never get the chance again. “They found out I had something going on with you, so they arranged the marriage with the daughter of one of my dad’s business partners and decided to move.”
Nakamaru slowly moved his head to look at Ueda. For one of those rare times, he could see so many emotions in that pretty face now. It was the truth, Nakamaru figured. Everything Ueda had just told him was the truth. “You’re going to marry.”
“I wanted to tell you, really, but as they told me, everything was settled already and we moved the next day. I wanted, but my parents didn’t let me contact you.”
“You could have called all this time”, Nakamaru pointed out. He couldn’t possibly grasp any other thought.
“I came back just a month later and you were gone.” Ueda shrugged helplessly.
“You had my phone number.”
“I…” Ueda looked down. “I couldn’t call, they would have found out about that. I wanted to go see you.”
“My parents signed me in at this school just a few weeks, after you had left.”
“I found out”, Ueda confirmed with a nod. “My parents were delighted when I told them I want to come to this school.”
It remained silent for a little longer, then Nakamaru shook his head. “Why did you come here?”
“I wanted to see you again.”
“What for?” He bit his lip, pulled his hand from the warm grip. “There’s not a single chance for the two of us.”
Ueda’s expression fell, his look got desperate. “Yuichi…”
“No, there isn’t”, Nakamaru said firmly. “You’re enganged.”
“But it wasn’t my decision; it doesn’t mean anything to me.”
“That doesn’t change the fact.”
Ueda didn’t fight anymore. He let Nakamaru go and stayed, watching him leave.
He had thought telling the truth, explaining his reasons, would change everything; but nothing had changed.
Nakamaru just probably hated him now even more than he had before.
Yasuda frowned, as he saw Nakamaru passing them, running into the direction of the entrance.
“Is he leaving already?”
Subaru turned his head. He had lit a cigarette and tried catching a goldfish, but he had failed several times already. Yasuda wasn’t much of a help, as he only always sat next to Subaru and held his breath, crossing his fingers.
But it was cute, so Subaru didn’t mind.
“It looks like that.”
Yasuda tilted his head slightly and blinked. “Is he not enjoying the festival?”
“It’s none of your business, Yasu”, Subaru said and as he finally caught a fish, he made a victory pose and held up the little bag with the fish inside.
“There”, he said and held it out for Yasuda. He looked cute in his pink and green chequered yukata and the light blue obi. Coloful and bright as usual.
The younger one blinked his eyes. “It’s for me?”
Subaru just smiled and gave it to him, before they went on. Ueda passed them, shuffling his feet over the ground and walking to the entrance, too.
They both frowned this time, but didn’t comment on it.
It was forgotten, however, as they reached the others and got involved in their games and conversations.
Toma tilted his head and leaned in to Yamashita a bit. “Is that Masuda?”
Yamashita followed his line of view and as if Tegoshi had heard everything, the younger one popped up right before him and looked out, too.
He gasped and quickly approached them to get closer and have a better view.
Now, everyone had noticed and they all were rather interested in what Masuda’s girlfriend may look like.
It didn’t take too long for them to notice they were observed and Masuda turned red, as he saw all the others.
“Massu”, Yasuda shouted happily and waved him over.
The girl gave him a slightly insecure look, but he took her hand and pulled her over.
“How nice”, Yasu chirped and smiled at her. “You are really cute.”
She was small and slim, wore her hair as a short-cut and curly; her eyes big and brown.
Okura exchanged a look with Kazuya and they both grinned. Jin and Uchi apperently thought the same, as Uchi nudged Okura’s shoulder and pointed from her to Tegoshi.
They could have been siblings.
She smiled now and bowed slightly. “Thank you.”
“Those are my friends from school”, Masuda said politely. Then he looked at the guys again. “That’s Miki-chan.”
Friendly, they all introduced themselves, before they let those two off the hook.
“She really is cute”, Shige pointed out.
Koyama agreed. “She looks angelic.”
“She seems to be a perfect match for him”, Jin agreed.
Tegoshi kept quiet for the remaining time. He couldn’t forget the image of Masuda gripping that girl’s hand, his gentle expression.
He knew being jealous was pointless, but he couldn’t stop himself.
Feigning to be okay, he endured the rest of the night, before they went home and back to their dorms.
It was late, when Masuda finally came back. Tegoshi still lay awake and listened to Massu getting ready to go to bed. Masuda took his time, disappeared to the bathroom for a long while.
When the small night lamp was turned off and Masuda lay still, Tegoshi slowly turned and looked at his room mate. He just opened his eyes slightly and saw Masuda sleeping peacefully.
He looked satisfied, even in his leep.
Tegoshi bit his lip and shut his eyes, trying to ban that image from his mind. It was too hurting to know Masuda was that happy, when he himself was just as unhappy. Being so close to the one he loved.
And yet, at this moment, Tegoshi couldn’t be any further away from Masuda.
