not a bond girl
spooks jo, ros (jo/adam, ros/adam) pg-13
jo is the first to speak. spoilers for 701.

Jo is the first to speak.

“He told me he was going to be careful.”

“He was always going to die, Jo. Always.”

She closes her eyes, but her ears are full of him. “Harry wouldn’t tell him where you were. He shouted and shouted. But Harry wouldn’t tell him. Said he’d do something stupid. He loved you.” She says finally, quietly, slowly meeting Ros’ gaze.

“No, Jo, he didn’t.”

She sighs, and watches Ros nearly forget to blink back the tears. She half-smiles, “You can cry. I don’t mind.”

It’s still for a moment, then Ros nods and looks down. “I’ve never really been the crying type.”

“I guessed.”

Ros studies her. “You’re a clever girl,” she murmurs and Jo can tell her eyes are wet and still, after everything, she doesn’t want it to show, “Promise me you’ll never let anyone change that.”

A tear falls onto the paper. Jo bites her lip. She’s never seen Ros be honest before. It’s a strange sensation.

“I promise.”

Her smile is small, careful. “Thank you.”

“He kissed me, once. He pretended he was drunk, pretended he couldn’t remember a thing the next day. But he wasn’t, he’d barely touched a drop all night.” She pauses, blinks, “He put his arms around my waist and just... kissed me.”

Silence.

“Did you kiss back?” It’s not an accusation.

Jo flushes, despite herself, “Yes.”

Ros takes her for a drink.

An hour later and Jo hiccups, “He did love you. He told me.”

“Really?” Her voice is even and she doesn’t look at her. In front of them the bar’s quiet, people disappearing into the shadows. If she closes her eyes she could almost believe that it’s him, not Jo, swaying gently next to her. So she doesn’t close her eyes.

“Yeah.”

She leans forward and curls her fingers around Jo’s palm. “He was always going to die, Jo. Always.”

“Ros.”

“You’re not a Bond Girl, Jo. Remember that.”

end.
