Because Wicked songs got brought up in the chat, I decided to go ahead and upload the songs from the Original Broadway Cast Recording for all of you lovely people. Keep in mind that the songs are not, not by any means the entire story. To keep from spoiling people for the show, there is no dialogue in this CD, and some songs are in fact left out. ALL THE SAME, the cd is awesome and if anyone likes show tunes and hasn't heard it, you need to, now. Or hell, even if you DON'T like showtunes or don't know if you do, give it a try.
I also uploaded the video trailer for the Wicked Tour.
I've also written my own comments about each song.
1.
No One Mourns the Wicked I love the opening number. I really do. It's so powerful, and really draws you in. You get some of the backstory in it, and hear Glinda's opera-voice, which is just awesome.
2.
Dear Old Shiz This song transitions you back to the past, and the days at Shiz. Real short, just the students singing about their school and then Galinda's entrance.
3.
The Wizard and I One of the best songs in the show, and Elphaba's first. This is young, hopeful!Elphaba, something that gets crushed rather brutally. ;.;
4.
What Is This Feeling? I think everyone agrees this is just one of the best things ever. It's a hate song stuffed full of love cliches. Hilarious. Elphaba and Galinda sniping at each other. ^^
5.
Something Bad Definitely the lowest point in the show, but it is rather necessary as far as plot goes. It's between Elphaba and the Goat professor, Doctor Dillamond, and introduces the problem of Animal oppression in Oz.
6.
Dancing Through Life Fiyero's entrance, and the one that shows his image as a shallow, rich boy (you'll continue to think that if you just listen to the songs, because his character really comes out in the dialogue. He's honestly NOT what he seems like in this song. ^^;). A lot happens in this song that is cut out for this recording, because it encompasses a lot of developments in the show (such as Galinda tricking Elphaba then feeling guilty, Elphaba getting her trademark hat, etc), and they don't want to spoil it for people. All in all, rather fun and silly. You also get to hear Boq and Nessarose.
7.
Popular Um, everyone loves this song. Why? Because it's hilarious. Galinda trying to make over Elphaba. It's just funny. Galinda's signature song.
8.
I'm Not That Girl The softest song in the show. You either absolutely love it or ignore it, pretty much. I think it's beautiful. Elphaba's unrequited love song. (Also, Idina has voice control like no other.)
9.
One Short Day The last song that's sung while Glinda and Elphaba are still innocent and idealistic. They head to the Emerald City to meet with the Wizard.
10.
A Sentimental Man Very short song that the Wizard sings. Um. The Wizard is a liar. Grrrr.
11.
Defying Gravity If you don't know this song, you don't know Wicked. The most famous song from the show, and with good reason. It's Elphaba's signature song, and when she breaks away to openly defy the Wizard. It's absolutely breathtaking when performed onstage.
12.
Thank Goodness One of my favorite songs. It initially sounds happy, but underneath Glinda's cheeriness, there's definite sadness and uncertainty. This is also the song where she proclaims herself engaged to Fiyero without asking him. You don't hear it, but in the middle of the song they have an argument because Fiyero doesn't like that Glinda is allowing the lies about Elphaba to spread (I don't know why they hid this in the recording, actually. Are they trying to keep people from finding out Fiyero is in love with Elphaba? Um, he has a love song with her later, kinda hard to hide that -_-;)
13.
Wonderful The Wizard tries to get Elphaba back on his side. It's in a very different style than the other songs, so it took me a really long time to grow fond of it. I like it now.
14.
I'm Not That Girl (Reprise) Glinda's reprise of Elphaba's unrequited love song, after Fiyero runs off with Elphaba. Short, sweet, and sad.
15.
As Long As You're Mine Elphaba and Fiyero's love song, and probably my favorite love song from a musical ever. It's not typical in that it has rather dark and powerful musical undertones. These two also both have gorgeous voices, and when they sing together it's so pretty. Kinda sad in that they're both essentially admitting they have very little chance for a future together.
16.
No Good Deed My favorite song in the show, and one of my favorite songs of all time. Dark, angsty, and very powerful, this is after Elphaba has lost everything. This is also a stunning example of Idina's perfect control over her voice. Just... wow. My love for this song has no bounds.
17.
March of the Witch Hunters Exactly what the title says. A lot of people proclaiming how Elphaba needs to die. Introduces the Tin Man and the Lion.
18.
For Good A beautiful song, when Glinda and Elphaba reconcile and talk for the last time. This is the friendship song, and the song that makes people (like my mother, ha!) cry.
19.
Finale The end of the show, tying the music back into the first song, and Glinda sings her own short goodbye.
Because I also love being a canon whore, and because I just saw this cast again and I adore them, I've uploaded a trailer for the Wicked tour. In it you can see parts of Elphaba singing "Defying Gravity" during her transition to becoming known as the Wicked Witch of the West, Galinda singing "Popular" to a not very enthusiastic Elphie, and a whole bunch of little moments from the show set to "One Short Day" (a song I really wish they'd stop using while advertising Wicked).
Elphaba is played by Stephanie J. Block, and Glinda by Kendra Kassebaum.
The Wicked Tour Trailer If you are interested in hearing all of the dialogue and the missing songs, I can send you the live recording of Wicked's opening night on Broadway on Oct. 31st, 2003. It is a live recording, so you do hear the audience, but it's pretty damn clear. The only part missing, for some unknown reason, is Dillamond's removal from school and Elphaba and Fiyero saving the lion cub (and starting to fall in love). I don't know why that part is missing, but it is. Everything else is in there, however. BUT! Listening to it would spoil you terribly, so only ask for it if you're sure you want to be spoiled.
Also, I know these songs and video clip will expire in 7 days. This post will be for if anyone ever wants me to upload the songs. Just drop a comment here and I'd be glad to reupload them - I don't care if it's months later. Wicked for all! ^^
