Title: Bone words.
Fandom: FFXII
Characters: Old Dalan, Urutan-Yensa
Theme: #69 no dialogue
Rating: PG - 13
Summary: A completely insane possible back-story for Old Dalan.
They take his face, give him words. He cannot breathe; the bone of his mask removed. The punishment, worse than dying, is becoming a not person.
(He cannot hear the voice of the Sandsea)
They take his robes, his skin, his heart and he watches his once-brothers cut through the mercurial sands on the back of their Yensa. He will no longer be allowed this privilege; with no bone to shield him they will not know him as Urutan-Yensa - they will hunt him like a Hume.
He is found, burnt near dying, by that vermin race and he screeches at them what his once-people would know as a signal to leave him be. But without the shrilling mouthpiece that reached from his mask, it sounds like a scream.
They take him to an inn. The burn of skin never uncovered leaves any attack on them ineffectual; by the time he has come to heal he can understand words that once sounded as a hiss of sand.
The first time he tries to form a word they do not understand what he is trying to say, so they name him after the first gasp he emits.
Dalan, they call him now.

A/N - I know that this is completely non-viable. Really, I do. But I had to write it. Imagine; The Sandsea as a possible variant of the Wood - the Urutan-Yensa hear the Sandsea as Viera do the wood. They also wear masks as do the Garif; Tribal culture differentiated in that the Urutan-Yensa use aggression, ritualistic training of Yensa to prove ability/worthiness? Also use of whistles and/or hums as primary vocal communication, but retaining the ability if not the desire to use words. Add to that a sense of cultural superiority and what do you get? Urutan-Yensa. .... I sound drunk. Sorry for the long and musing and ridiculous A/N everybody
