1. When did you first fall in love with ship number one?
This is interesting, because the characters belong to my first fandom, Final Fantasy VII. Of course, when I began to get fandomwise for the game, I was very young and completely unable to comprehend of slash. Even when I later “got into it”, even when there was a point when I couldn’t watch West Side Story without slashing (yeah, I know), thinking of slash in Final Fantasy VII was simply bizarre.
THEN CAME icemilk. And a short-lived RPG that went by two names at different times. I played Reno, she played Cloud, and in the OOC community, crack talk developed so that Cloud/Reno became a strange, inexplicable joke. As a further joke, I wrote up a little analysis of their interactions in game, interpreted in two ways: the slash fangirl way, and the sane individual way.
At some point during our one-on-one RP and my own, generally insane musings, I did develop a soft spot for the ship, and this was before Advent Children. I’m not sure when, exactly, but it wasn’t within the context of playing the game, though I do now appreciate that-I enjoy the way they connect without connecting. It’s, erm, hard to explain within the context of the question, and already I’ve gone on too long for what’s really only a crack-ship. Things clicked about the odd way they relate to one another as the grudging leaders of teams on opposite sides. Plus, Reno says things like this to Cloud: BlablabhardtimesasaTurk, something about not regretting it, “I even got to meet a bunch of wingnuts like you.” + “If we both survive… If we can save our lives…” + an unwillingness to fight for ze last time.
2. When did you fall in love with ship number five?
Very recently, and only sort of. Because, with Bleach especially, I am a multi-shipper and I don’t… really strongly ship anything. Also, in a way, related to RP - because I toyed a bit with a Renji, and just flopped around in his head for awhile. Though, because I don’t go into any RP with the idea of finding romance, my “love” for Renji/Rukia is tempered with the plain fact that it’s very possible to interpret Renji’s devotion for Rukia as being a remnant of their childhood and, in fact, is a sort of sibling feeling. She was his family and the loss he felt and struggled to recapture was that bond - after all, the loss was encouraging her adoption into the Kuchiki family. (Likewise, I ship IshiHime but with the casual note of “of course, there’s little evidence that Ishida’s actually in love with her - we know Orihime’s mad mad mad forever mad about Ichigo, and Ishida seems to actually support that pairing. Yes, aside from having that chivalrous Quincy streak of “must protect teh ladiez”, Orihime especially as one of his nakama, and finding Orihime attractive, Ishida’s an IchiHime fan boy. Simply because Orihime’s so very in love with Ichigo.”)
Rereading things in the manga, though, for the ship of Renji/Rukia … just, the line, “Now that I think about it I was probably just scared because I... damn I really am a tramp down to my bones... I hate myself. I bark at the star but I don't have the courage to jump and grab it.” Arguments of Renji’s feelings for Rukia as being platonic are a little ruined by that line, because of what “grab it” could connote. .. But it could also connote platonic sibling yeah. In any case, even if I like the “Renji’s in love with Rukia!!!”, Rukia’s feelings are up in the air. But, um, I like this pairing because of that line. Because Renji is whipped very hard by Rukia, and because their relationship would be very, “I want to kill her, but I also want to kiss her”.
3.What is your favorite moment of ship number three?
Hard, question is hard! There are a few, I mean, the moment when Naruto’s crawling by his chin - which is really a moment for Sakura/Naruto/Sasuke because he’s motivated by his intense love for them - desperate for his team but also driven to the brink by how painful it is to understand Gaara’s situation, and Gaara’s realization, his being completely blown away by Naruto’s understanding (and, also, his being driven by love). I like when Deidara’s using Gaara as a couch and Naruto’s shouting for Gaara to stop sleeping and just get up, and the intensity of his grief and rage when he’s told Gaara’s dead. There’s this panel, a cut off panel that’s only a shot of his jaw, neck, shoulders, and then his face, fanged and eyes gone fox and really just, ugly fierce with teh raaaage, frustration, grief. It’s bizarre how these boys who don’t know one another at all, for whom a handshake is awkward, still feel connected. Naruto’s an emotional person in general, and a lot of his issues with saving Gaara in that arc were really and obviously issues with saving Sasuke, so it may not be saying much that he gets so upset, but… wibble. My favorite moment is probably that handshake, however. Awkward moment is awkward.

… Snicker. There are no girls in ship one. But, okay, let’s pretend Cloud is the girl because he wore a dress once. Tseng/Cloud. … um. Every time icemilk and I attempted to computer this ship, our brains shattered. They don’t interact very much. When they do, Tseng’s either condescending and kick-ass, or, asking after Aerith. But, they are both “leaders”. …

I guess Reno/Aerith? Not as popular as the inexplicable Reno/Tifa in fandom (dudes. AC crack aside, are you fucking crazy? Tifa hates ShinRa. He dropped the Plate on Sector Seven, and she lived there, her “new life” was there. But, more importantly-Tifa really hates ShinRa), but there’s still people out there who dig it. In my “MUST SHIP AERITH WITH EVERYONE” days, I considered it. Aerith has reason to dislike the Turks, great reason, but she also may be able to put that side, because she’s weird like that. She’d be less amused with Reno calling her “The Ancient”. She’s cheerful and flirty, and he’s kind of a nonchalant, cocky douchebag (I run by game here, not movie). They don’t really interact in game so it’s hard to imagine. He told the guards to shoot at her and stepped all over those flowers. I mean. Clearly. True love.
6. What’s your favorite moment for ship four?
Kishimoto, I wish you’d give me more to work with post-Time Skip with them. Because I ship them so hard. This is another one for which I find it difficult to pick a single moment. Rival Shipping, hurray! (Hee, Kakashi noting that it’s similar to Naruto/Sasuke). … I like how, even while Ino’s hanging off of Sasuke’s back and neck, she barely bothers to look at him. She’s all eyes for Sakura, whom she’s goading. Their fight, of course, and the aftermath, followed by how they start doing everything together after it, if only because the rest of Team Seven has mysteriously disappeared. I like the cohesive whole of it so much that it becomes difficult to pick out a moment - like in the Forest in the Second Part of the exam and Shikamaru telling Ino to do something, and she’s hit by all those memories but does. Then she fixes Sakura’s hair and it’s great.
7. How long was there between the time you got into the fandom and the time you started shipping ship number 3?
No idea. Because I’m not a hardcore shipper of anything really -- I just like exclamation points and that word that means to overstate and exaggerate but sounds nicer than both of those words. But I never care as much as I seem to, I just flutter around in fits of enthusiasm, sometimes. It probably wasn’t very long in, though, because not being a hard-core shipper means, for me, having a mind open to most of the ships, the possibilities there and waiting for a good hit. They’ve got some good hits. :D

Honestly not sure, because I didn’t at all for a long time. It’s all theangrystar I think. Then, suddenly, I was head over heels for the antagonistic way they relate. He’s a Turk, he’s always been there trying to make her face what she’d rather not be, do what she’d never want to do. Every time they meet, a side of Aerith not usually seen comes out-she’s hostile. She’s cold, snappy, and inclined to argue. He slaps her on the helicopter, but he tells her to take care of herself in the Mythril Caves. (“Strange, hearing that from you.” “Then stay out of ShinRa’s way.” paraphrase). And, as she says, “I’ve known Tseng since I was little… He’s one of the people in the world who really knows me.” more paraphrase. But she’s still a total bitch to him when he lies bleeding and half-dead on the Temple floor. According to Reno, Tseng’s got a thing for her, but, who can say? All I can say is: UNF.

Reno/Gaara/Renji. This is the red-haired OT3. Likewise, Ino/Naruto/Cloud. The first OT3 really breaks my brain, because of how different the personalities are. Reno and Renji would probably shoot the shit while Gaara sat there in stony, apathetic silence. Ino and Naruto would completely bowl Cloud over. It’d be pretty funny.
