jennib82 There are times when Connie can't help but wonder why she doesn't apply for another job. Especially days like today when Mike's overstepped the line once more.
Seated in a little cafe an old friend had recommended to her, Connie looked over the menu, made her choice and carefully folded the menu back up as she prepared to wait for Mike. He'd warned her he would be a little late as he needed to stop at the nearest computer store for an emergency blackberry surgery.
Connie bit her lip to stop herself from smiling as she thought about Mike and his relationship with his blackberry. Poor man couldn't survive one day without that thing. She'd hate to be on the other side of the counter if Mike's baby was broken beyond repair.
The waitress brought her a coffee, and Connie smiled her thanks.
As she sipped the hot liquid, she opened her notes and read over her notes from the courtroom. It was a system she had created shortly after her first court case. As she read, she marked sections of the manuscript where it was possible the case could have gone a different way and the possible solutions they would have had to employ in order to regain any lost ground. Connie likes to plan things out, to have all her cards on the table before her, which was another reason why she sometimes wondered if she hadn't gone into the wrong profession.
In the courtroom, everything was up for grabs. It was an environment where chaos reigned and nothing was predictable. It was the type of environment Mike thrived in. Only he would have considered taking the risk he did by admitting that he had told her to flirt with one of the jurors from a previous case in order to win. And only he would have been paid off the way he was.
The disgusting asshole who was the defendant had been locked away where he belonged.
Connie didn't allow herself to often think about the defendants in those terms as it was disrespectful and sometimes a defendant wouldn't be guilty, much as she didn't like to think of those few times where an innocent person was put away either because he'd been set up or because of circumstantial evidence.
But this guy. This guy had deserved to be put away, even if it was for just manipulating his fiancé. Connie had never seen a girl quite that far gone as that young woman had been. It just went to show that there were still certain lows a person could go to that Connie was unfamiliar with.
A hand clasped her shoulder, followed by: "It's your favourite psychopath." Mike moved past her to take his chair.
"I wouldn't call you my favourite." Connie closed her notepad and put it away in her briefcase.
"Really?" Mike asked in disbelief. "Who's the competition?"
Connie had to think for a moment. "Will E. Coyote."
Mike stared at her for a moment before laughing. "Of course. Guess I can't compete with him."
"I wouldn't recommend trying it." She warned, because Mike was just crazy enough to do it.
Their waitress returned and they placed their orders. Mike waited until the woman was on the other side of the room, before speaking.
"Connie... look, I..." He took up the napkin and twisted it around in his hands for a moment before setting it down. "I'm sorry I put you on the spot in court today."
Connie crossed her arms and studied him. "You can't keep doing that, you know," she sighed, "but you will."
Mike nodded, looking shamefaced. "I will."
"Because that's how you work," Connie continued, relentless. "And you get the results you need."
Mike nodded.
There was a brief pause between them.
Mike broke it when he reached across to grab the bread basket and offered it to her. "But I'll always buy you a meal afterwards to apologize. And there will never be a time when I don't apologize for embarrassing you like I did today."
Connie took a bread stick. "And that's why I don't mind."
Mike shot her a look, and she added: "Much."
