ALIENS! FIREFLY ACTORS! That woman from Lost who we like more than Kate! SPECIAL EFFECTS! THE HOT PRIEST! What more could we possibly want besides some hamster munching?
I hemmed and hawed about picking up the original mini-series before the new series premiered but in the end decided to just wait for the new and shiny special effects. If I'm going to get eaten by a giant lizard, I want to be scared of the giant lizard not busy laughing because it reminds me of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Even though we didn't actually see what the aliens actually looked like, the one brief peek was all we needed.
The Breakdown:
Erica Evans: Yay for a female blonde FBI agent who can actually kick ass and take names. Not so cool is the fact that she's angsting over the fact that her husband (Sawyer) left her. But don't worry Erica! You can have Alan Tudyk the hot Priest instead! Also, I think you need to sit your son down and have a little chat about thinking with his head and not the one below his waist. May you have better luck next time.
Father Jack Landry: Since the death of Alan Tudyk, the Priest is now my piece of eye candy, which is inappropriate because he is a Priest. But then he wore casual clothes and I forgot all about the whole "devoted to God" thing.
Erica/Jack: They held hands once at the end and BAM! I ship it. I think I may be addicted to OTPs.
Secret Meetings: Was very creeped out that they cut back the skin at the neck to find out if everyone was human. Was very scary. I'd want to join the resistance and everything but not if they're cutting into my neck. What if the woman with the scalpel slips? And what about sanitizing the blade? Also, secret meetings would work a lot better if you weren't suddenly attacked and only three people got out alive.
Anna: I find her short hair funny. She looks very professional, but at the same time whenever I see her I always do this double-take because I'm so used to Morena Baccarin having long curly hair. Also, hoping that her flirtation with reporter guy!Chad to continue.
Tyler, Erica's son: Is definitely a teenage boy who wants to get into Visitor Lisa's pants. Which now leads me to wonder inappropriate things like how sex between a human and a Visitor would work and whether the female Visitors eat their mates afterwards. He appears to be going through some teen angst, but I didn't really pay attention as I was more interested in his mother holding hands with Father Jack.
Tyler/Lisa: Okay, she offers him an apple at their first meeting. An apple. And she's a reptile. So she's both Eve and the Snake. Nice. I salute you, writers.
Ryan Nichols: Is an alien, but a good alien, who will most likely die due to angst of dumping girlfriend to keep her safe and from other Vistors finding him and torturing him wherein he will die for the cause.
Dale Maddox aka Alan Tudyk: The moment I saw him, I decided he would be my favourite character as one, he is WASH and two, he was just so sweet and understanding toward Erica about her husband walking out on her. He volunteered to take extra shifts and urged her to concentrate on being a mother to her brat son. And they had this whole teasing partnership and were just so cute. So, of course, he turned out to be a bad guy. He ends up getting killed by Erica when he brings his buddies to the secret meeting revealing that he was one of the sleeper cells she was looking for all along. Erica hit him with a piece of metal to the head, which tore his mask, revealing that underneath was reptile flesh. She started to pull it back but then he woke up so there was no big reveal. Instead, he tried to attack her again and she shoved the rod into his chest, which brought back that one scene of Serenity that I'd been doing a spectacular job of pretending didn't happen (Personal!Cannon FTW!). This then led me to hauling out Firefly and watching Wash play with his dinosaurs, which then led to a moment of irony as the aliens look like dinosaurs.
