My friends, today is the release day of a book I have awaited eagerly: Catherynne M. Valente's
Palimpsest, the story of a sexually-transmitted city, beyond the end of the world, accessible only through your dreams.
I can't even begin to express how excited I am by this book! If you've talked to me at all in the last couple months, you have almost certainly heard about it already, as I've had little else on my mind.
The marketing is about the cleverest I've ever seen, complete with
three video trailers, a half-
alternate reality game/half-
interactive fiction convoluted web of clues leading to jig-saw puzzles and pre-released tracks from
the soundtrack (by none other than the glorious, mythical
S. J. Tucker (our own
s00j)), and of course a nationwide release tour.
That last bit is possibly the most exciting, as it includes
a train ride on which dedicated adventurers can join Valente and Tucker, from Chicago to New Orleans, with magic and music at both ends, and inevitably in the middle.

Have you ever heard of Transmetropolitan?
"Palimpsest just knocks me flat with her use of language: rich, cool, opiated language, language for stories of strange love and hallucinated cities of the mind." -- Warren Ellis
How about the Griffin & Sabine trilogy?
"It's never enough to merely read a book like the Palimpsest, it has to be imbibed, and its sensuality fully savoured." -- Nick Bantock
