Portland desperately needs its own version of the Hipster Olympics.

Genius! (Thanks dryad271!)

I especially like the "ironic t-shirt table" and the sprint to the ATM to see if their parent's check has cleared.

that is just the funniest shit ever!!! Portland definitely needs one.

the "two finger rule" on pants is just hilariously right on!

and "we're forced to assume that our contestants participation is strictly ironic" is the funniest bit about that vid!!

strange thing about Portland (and this is obviously subjective to me): what i've gathered from the people who've been there since the 80s or before--it used to be a place where the marginalized went to feel like a part of something. but it's dangerously close to collapsing on itself. now it almost feels as though you yourself are marginalized if you don't affect yourself in an ironic, counter-culture way; suddenly you are marginalized simply for being...well, simple. which is a large reason why i had to go--i suddenly started to feel as though i was not good enough to be there.

btw: if you do end up moving cross country, and if i'm still in the USofA, well give me a heads up and i'll help truck you across the country. i love long, laborious drives.

(wow, this response sounds bitter! hahahahaha!!!!)

Hey stranger!

I just love this reply. I am feeling much the same way, although I have always felt less cool than my peers in one way or another. Thing about getting older is that you just stop caring. So I like to surround myself with people who don't care either, and that is more than challenging in a place like Portland.

And trying to find a man my age to date who isn't completely full of himself, obsessed with counter culture (which isn't counter at all), fashion, biking, and irony is really fun.

So yeah, my mother and my therapist are both convinced that I won't find a compatible partner until I move back east. The psychology of this is fairly involved, but I'd say they are probably right.

So when that happens, I will let you know, cause I would love a travel partner.

yeah i noticed that the people i still keep in contact with in Portland are people who either A) stopped worrying about the hipster factor, and/or B) have totally accepted who they are apart from the cool kids.

and you're right: counter-culture as we know has become as mainstream as, say, suit and ties.

you know what i've discovered to be the new counter-culture? the new counter culture are those who live loud and speak of it softly.

still waters that run deep? yeah, well they also run counter clockwise, so to speak.

i should be in-country until late spring/early summer. if you move before that, well then i'm at your service, sista.
