is it possible that the mattress is slightly larger than the standard twin? i've never had that problem with any of my ikea beds. they're not very sturdy by any means, but they should hold one or two people fine.

I had that problem with my bed when I was at Waterloo. My mattress was too big and was warping the frame. The problem was not solved but improved by taking close dimensions of the inside of the bed and buying a sheet of composite wood board that I used instead of slats. The board would still occasionally fall through, but not nearly as often. When the frame was passed to my sister, she solved the problem by getting a new bed frame.
