EnvyxDante is actually one of the few pairings that legitimately squicks me. And not even for the fact that it's het incest, it's more the dynamics between the characters. I've, personally, never seen much liking from Envy to Dante. I see it as he stays with her out of necessity and habit and ties that run too deep to break but ties he hates all the same. I think Envy hates Dante, because of the hold she has over him. The scene that really stands out to me is in episode 49 (48?) when Wrath comes in, screaming that he needs the stone to save his 'mother' and Envy's holding him back. Dante makes that comment about homunculi not having mothers, and Envy shoots her a look that's somewhere between disbelief and a death-glare. To me, that spoke volumes. And I'm of the belief that the only reason Envy (human or homunculi) existed was to keep Hohenheim with Dante. There's evidence for that in episode 49 when Ed tells Dante 'don't use a child to further your own agenda' and Dante replies 'your father told me the same thing, once'.
But I've always been one for more twisted relationships anyway. I like the idea of Dante manipulating Envy, toying with him almost, and casting him aside when it suits her. But that's just the way I see them, for my own fic writing purposes. It'd be interesting to read a fic that explores the dynamic you've set up here. :D
*giggles* Heard before, yet surprised all the same that EnvyxDante does squick you. ;)
Thanks for your points--in general, I just love detailed fandom analysis like that. ^_^ I need to emphasize your point on Dante using Envy--as either human or Homunculus--to keep Hoenheim by her side...because I like it, it makes sense, harkens to some statistic I read once...how sometimes women get themselves pregnant to solidify the bond between herself and her lover, which is a BAD idea.
There's just something about the power dynamics of it that bother me. I don't know. And considering some of the things that don't squick me - I love me some Envy/Hohenheim - I really can't pinpoint exactly what it is that bothers me about it. Just the dynamics of it push my squick buttons.
You're more than welcome! I love fandom meta like this. :D I've always seen Dante as doing exactly that - trying to save her relationship with Hohenheim by getting pregnant. Yeah, it's usually called 'oopsing', where the woman claims it's an accident but in actuality sabotaged the birth control. It's sick but fascinating.
Envy/Hoho squicks a lot of people. I think I like it because of the fics I've read with it. In each of them, Envy has been the aggressor, which is such a reversal of traditional father/son relationships. That really, really appeals to me.
(Thank you! It was a fun fic to write. :D Don't know if I'll write more of them, though.)
