Hughes falls asleep in his arms on the way there.

He has opted to carry the man, if only because Maes is weakened, and walking with a potential concussion will only end in injury. He holds him carefully, unfazed by the weight but cautious about hurting him further.

They go all the way to Roy Mustang's house this way, and when he finally lays him carefully on the porch while he rings the doorbell, he realizes his hands are shaking. He crouches beside the unconscious man, and looks up when the doorstep is flooded with light.

He's a head taller than Mustang and yet, so much smaller. "I'm sorry to bother you," he begins, "but he needs someone right now. I can't bring him to his family."

Dark slate stares at him, the same hard look Envy gave him an hour earlier. "What do you mean, 'can't bring him to his family'? Bring him inside."

He agrees silently, lifting Hughes with ease and placing him gently on Colonel Mustang's couch. "There was an attempt on his life," he says finally. "Tonight." Why isn't he stuttering? What is this calmness that's fallen over him? He doesn't understand, but he goes with it, fixing Mustang with a quiet gaze. "I was in time to stop it, but I assume they'll be back for him."

"They? -- Rubens, what the hell --"

He cuts him off, something he will most likely pay dearly for later. "I can't explain. Just... I know he won't ask you, but he needs a place to stay. I'm asking you in his place, sir, keep him here. He's not safe at his home."

He doesn't wait for Mustang to reply, turning on his heel and leaving out the door. Next...

Ten minutes later finds him standing on the doorstep of the Hughes family home, and he swallows hard as he knocks on the door. It's late, but there's still a light on in the living room, and from where he's standing he can see Glacier Hughes close her book and open the door. Her face is expectant, and when it's not her husband, the expression falters.

"What's the matter?" she asks gently, and he shivers a little. Her smile... Hughes will never forgive him.

"Your husband," is all he says, words coming sluggishly. Like in a dream, and he's not sure he can do it.

"Maes...?"

"Your husband," he begins again, and his voice is a little stronger this time. The lie isn't easy, but it comes easily enough. He hates himself for it. "Your husband was killed tonight."

Kind eyes are staring at him, and he sees her begin to sag. Before she drops he catches her by the forearms, helps her into the house and onto the couch. She's not crying. She's staring at the floor, at her feet, out the window. Anywhere but at his face, and he sits quietly beside her until she speaks again.

"He knew this would happen."

He blinks, glances at her. Knew...?

"He knew it, and he still went. He didn't say anything, but I know he knew."

He knows not to give the little bit of smile he has left in reassurance. She seems to be dealing with it without his help. All he can do is sit, wait for her. "Mrs Hughes..."

"So then, what now?" She doesn't wait for him. "Will you move us, then? Elysia and myself?"

He bows his head. "We will. Colonel Mustang's team, I mean. They'll be dealing with it. This... the Fuhrer can't know about this. For all we know, he had this happen." He's lying again. He acts like he's clueless like Edward Elric or Mustang himself, but he knows for sure. Wrath had no hand in it, but he let Envy know. He's the enemy, and he's sitting here on her couch like he's some old friend just over for tea. "I'm sorry that I don't have any more information on who it was at the moment... the investigation will take place, of course, but..."

She nods quietly, and she sinks down slowly, head lowering until it's resting in her palms. He has nothing else to say, even as she begins to sob noiselessly. "Mrs Hughes, I... I have to get going," he says finally, and without anything else he can do, he leaves her to crumble.

--

He returns to Father's side.

He allows Greed to take over, smirking and proud. He lets himself go for a little while, sleeps. He knows Greed won't tell. Greed likes the idea of hiding something. Greed lies straight to Father's face about the death of Maes Hughes.

"If I find out later you've lied to me, Greed," warns Father, and he shrinks back, hiding behind Greed's confidence, Greed's bravery. "His knowledge can't be allowed to get out."

"As you wish, Daddy," smirks Greed.

Of course not.
