---
Things've been different lately.
He's used to being a bachelor, the man of the house, by himself. Leaving beer cans strewn around the bedroom floor at six AM was never a problem before. Usually there was some kind of takeout there, too, waiting for him to clear it all up in the morning before work.
He can't do that anymore.
A long rope of gold tied with a red ribbon switches down the hall, its owner pad-thunking across the floor with awkward steps. He watches it go, somewhat curious to know what the little one is up to. He had been sure this wouldn't happen to him. He'd never liked children, after all. This was a little different, though.
A yelp from down the hall catches his attention, and he jogs over to see what has become of his young 'roommate'. Edward is picking himself up off the floor, rubbing at a friction-burned knee. "Carpet-burn," says the little one matter-of-factly, picking himself up and toddling off again.
That's another thing about Edward. No matter what happens to him, whether he stubs his toe or shifts his automail in a painful sort of way, he never complains about it. He just gets back up and toddles off. Roy doesn't understand it, but it makes things a little easier. It relieves a bit of worry.
Perhaps, he figures, he should rewind and explain. The bare bones of the story are that somehow, he's got a very small, childish version of Fullmetal on hand. He has to wonder why Aruphonse just... left the little one with him, but he understands as well that Edward can no longer participate in their journey. Not like this, anyway. And though Ed misses his brother, he knows the blonde understands too.
"Pony!" Ed is yelling for him out in the library, and he ambles out to see what the little one has gotten into this time. The sight makes him sigh. Somehow, Ed has buried himself in a pile of books, one of which is clamped in a metal fist quite securely. He reaches in, digging Ed out and pulling him up by the armpits.
"Ed," he sighs, and Ed wraps his skinny little legs around his stomach, clinging around his neck with his arms. "You could have just asked, you know. I would have gotten it."
The little one pouts, arms going limp, but he feels that book pressing into his shoulderblades and is really sure that Ed is not letting go of it. He wonders what the book is, but he's learned not to question, and Ed toddles off to read as he puts him down. Roy turns to the mountain of displaced books and sighs. Cleaning... might as well.
Two days later finds the kitchen in complete disarray. Ed has been trying his hand at baking, with Roy overseeing only to operate the oven. There is flour /everywhere/. He's certain Ed's bath tonight is going to be white with the stuff, but the little blonde does not seem to care and simply goes about his new 'job' cheerfully. He's got a baker's hat perched on his head, piling all that yellow hair into the hat for safekeeping. He hasn't even asked what Ed's making, but it looks like... maybe it's cookies? He's not sure, because atop the chocolate chips Ed has dropped the entire contents of a can of cherry pie filling. He shudders to find out what the final product is.
When Ed's cookies come out of the oven and have turned out to be cherry-chocolate 'sparkles' (Ed says this is what Mama called them, so Roy doesn't argue), and also end up being somewhat delectable, Roy's a little bit shocked.
Bedtime is never a hassle, which he's thankful for. Ed tends to fall asleep hard and without warning, so it's never a surprise when Roy looks up to find Ed's face flopped half in his strawberry shortcake or drooling on his coloring book. He simply places down his novel, gathers the little one in his arms, and tucks him into the only bed in the house. Ed doesn't argue or struggle, because he's got this weird way of sleeping that Roy has never understood. It's useful, though.
He's tucking him in one night when Edward cracks open one big amber eye, fixing him with it sleepily. "Go back to sleep," he murmurs quietly, and the little one gives a little yawn and snuggles up.
Edward drifts off again, and Roy gives a faint smile, stroking his hair for a moment. At least... he's not too much trouble.
