For some reason, I haven't listened to Sonny Rollins since the beginning of fall semester. Someone, please tell me why I did this? I just started listening again, and I'm practically at a loss for words. I don't know why, but he's not nearly as well known as Coltrane. With Coltrane, it's what he plays that's so amazing to people. But with Sonny Rollins, it's the combination of what he plays and what he DOESN'T play that amazes me. Complicated syncopation, playing "out of time" WHILE playing in time, amazingly creative melodies, extraordinary tone, great use(but not excessive) of quotes, and great energy. In my eyes, this man is as much, if not more, of a musical genious as John Coltrane. Disagree if you must, but that's how I feel after listening to plenty of recordings of both artists.
On another note, I'm also listening to lots more recordings of musicians that play instruments other than saxophone. I've always listened to lots of Miles and Dizzy (I have well over 100 recordings of Miles), but I'm getting more into transcribing trombone (Bob Mintzer-Latin From Manhattan album has some great tbone solos), bass, and piano. I'm also listening a little more to Ella Fitzgerald.
I need a rhythm section. NOW.
