Maya Angelou is seriously one of the worst poets I have ever read. Her stuff is trite, clichéd, and sing-songy. It is devoid of any subtlety of meaning. I understand that we have an open-door policy with regard to posting poems by published poets, but seriously -- if this is your definition of great poetry then I beg you to familiarize yourself with better writers. Please. For the love of all that is good, please.

in other words, this poem is a "steaming pile of manure"

Of course, but I supplied reasons with my initial complaint.

this, also, i wonder about why the linebreaks. but then this rhymes, so that's obviously where the breaks go.

Thanks. Glad to know there's someone on this community who doesn't think I have the worst taste in poetry ever.

I dig Angelou's stuff, though I'm a little biased, as it's a bit like forbidden fruit to me. In Jr. High, our class didn't read Why Does the Caged Bird Sing? due to the sexual content. Our loss, huh?

Wow! Really? I remember we read that in, I think it was, 5th or 6th grade. If you don't mind my asking, what was the general locale of your school?

Heh, I recently showed a couple Angelou poems to my upperclassmen students, and they were amazed that the Angelou poems they had read in junior high had been edited. They enjoyed the more "adult" versions. :)

Don't be ashamed for the poetry you like. I like this, and I'm going to post it to my own journal.
