Merciless, pt. 3

It had started out as a replica of the Science Academy arena as re-purposed by two of the most demented minds ever to come out of those hallowed halls.  Now it had the look of a temple, or a court room.  Or both.  The ceiling, if there was one, was high enough that it was invisible, but spotlights hung high enough and were bright enough that the ( Read more... )

Z tapped his fingers impatiently. He had been sitting in this dank, dirty alleyway on this backwater world for who knows how long waiting for his contact to get off her ass and meet him ( ... )

At that instance, a red-headed girl in a black jacket came bounding into view. Her stunning green eyes helped highlight her sharp and keen appearance.

"I truly am sorry about the hold up...but I was just putting some finishing touches on a special project that's been percolating in my head for a few months now."

Her gaze turned to Z's bloodied hand.

"Huh? Looks like a nasty cut you've got there...need me to take a look at it?"

"No, No. We ain't got time for that. The anomaly I told ya about ain't gonna last for too much longer." Z spoke as he forced himself up, anxious to get this over with. He ran his non-bloodied hand through his hair and started down the alley.

"C'mon, the entry point is this way. Just hope nobody's stumbled across it while we were sittin' on our hands millin' around!" He muttered.

Shrugging her shoulders, Washu just sighed and followed along Z's path through the dirty alleyways. She had to admit, she'd never thought she'd find herself associating with another science enthusiast after turning to her profession as a scientist for hire. While the gig DID pay the bills, the scientific community tended to shy away from dealing with careers as 'shady' as hers.

Still, it was nice to collaborate with someone on her level during a brief respite from her contracts...even if she felt he was a bit on the pushy side.

It didn't take them long to reach a secluded wearhouse in the middle of the slums. A quick check on her holo-top confirmed that this was the place they were probably looking for. Still, out of professional courtesy, she checked with her associate to make sure.

"So...this is the place, huh?"

"Yeah, sure is. As I'm sure your instruments will tell ya." Z didn't feel the need to explain just how he managed to notice that Washu had her device out with his back turned to her. "C'mon, let's go have a looksee, shall we?"

Without waiting for an answer, Z opened the rapidly decaying door and stomped his way into the center of the building. The old place clearly used to be a factory of somekind, and there were reminants of old equipment scattered about everywhere. Washu had to struggle not to trip over any pieces of discarded equipment.

Once they had made decent headway into the factory, Z pulled out his own laptop and punched in a few coordinates. In a flash, a swirling vortex of light appeared before them.

"So this is it..." Z intoned, putting away is holotop. "...good thing nobody stumbled across this baby while I had it masked in subspace. That there is a entryway to a new world nobody's come into contact yet. We could be rich an' famous dependin' on what's on the other side."

Washu pursed her lips as she studied the portal. She had theorized about this phenomenon back at the academy...but she'd never thought she'd actually get to see it in person.

"Hmmm. Well, you're right, it certainly is a momentous discovery..." She trailed off. While she certainly wasn't one to balk at fame and fortune, the rational side of her told her that stepping into something as unknown and untested as this came with it's fair share of risks.

"...still, I'm a little leary of just popping in there and hoping we don't have our atoms rearranged into something unpleasent. Perhaps it would be better if we did some more tests, first?" Of course, it really wasn't a question from Washu's end, scientific methods always put caution to the forefront...even if Washu always didn't follow that in practice.

Z felt himself becoming almost livid. He had waited for so long for this moment. He wasn't about to let it slip through his fingers and be stuck here trying to manipulate Washu for another four months. He was already cutting things close as it was.

Trying to maintain a veneer of control on his features, he all but growled out, "Damnit! There's no need for that...my instruments tell me that the other world is perfectly habitable! You're tellin' me you question my expertise after all the data I've sent you? 'Sides, we need to jump on this right now! Who knows what other chumps are tryin' to pick up on this?!"

Washu had to arch an eyebrow at the display. Certainly, she had gotten used to Z's emotionaly charged outbursts online...but even she wasn't expecting that. Still, she could humor him a bit and just take a tiny peek. After all, what's science without risk, right?

Carefully, she stepped a few feet foward and prepared to look through the ethereal gateway....

...and she found herself unprepared for Z's push on her backside, forcing her head-long into the portal. Once she had stumbled inside, Z closed the gate with a wave of his hand, not bothering with the facade of using technology ( ... )
