It was in the clear sky of day that the fight took place. You’d expect a scene of such destruction to be accompanied by the dark and the rain. But the only storm in the air was the thunder of Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir.

It wasn’t by sheer happenstance that gods fought in the New York skyline but by order of Steve Rogers, who himself stood far below on the debris covered pavement. He stared up into the sky, the sun attempting to blind him of the battle that he demanded to Thor be taken off the streets and away from civilians and the buildings. It wasn’t such a small number of buildings that lay in rubble around the area because of them.

A new rumble of thunder erupted and a light that rivaled the sun’s brilliance shot across the air from the heavy hammer Thor swung in a large arc toward the God of Thunder’s adopted brother Loki. It was only Thor who knew this God’s face and only Thor who knew his tricks. The men and women who stood beside Thor in battle knew little of their enemy, just that he wanted them out of his way so he could lay claim to a planet he felt was his by right. The privilege of a god. Though many still disbelieved either Asgardian were truly gods. The devastation they wrecked in front of their eyes changed a few minds that day.

Thor’s attack had been meant as more warning than killing blow and Loki knew this. He shielded himself from the blow with ease and countered with an attack of his own conjured from the power he wielded in the arts of magic that held nothing of a warning in its’ ferocity. The yellow bolt of power struck Thor squarely in the chest and pushed him backward in the sky. Giving the God of Mischief more room to work with. But as room was given it was taken away as a new foe closed in on him.

Iron Man, with the power of his home built suit, was the only other combatant beside Thor who could fight face to face with Loki on this airbound battlefield and he was doing his best to weave in and out of range of Loki’s attacks. Tony Stark who operated the suit was a quick mind with fast reflexes so when he saw Thor draw Loki’s attention he took the chance to use his own earthen technology to stop a god. He threw a punch which connected with Loki’s jaw and readied a blast from his right hand but was too slow as Loki whipped his staff upward into the suit’s arm to deflect the aim away from him. Loki snarled at Tony like a feral creature, in a rage that such insignificant creatures dared raise arms against him.

“Look, I know you’ve had your heart set on Earth as your kingdom but that’s not going to happen,” Tony said. “It’s not too late to pack up and go home, ya know.”

“You’ll be the first to bend knee to me, Stark,” Loki answered. Tony raised his arm as Loki struck outward with his staff. Their strikes collided midway between them and Tony darted sideways to gain the time to shoot at Loki with his chest beam. A strike with that force would certainly do enough damage to make Thor’s crazed brother see sense. But as the smoke cleared from their previous blasts Tony saw that Loki had a similar idea and was firing a charged magical blast of his own. But as the god was striking out the space in front of him erupted in an explosion of fire and heat.

Tony looked down in time to see Hawkeye wave at him with a smirk, knowing Tony would owe him one for such a rescue. Tony turned back around to scan the sky for Loki and panicked at realizing he had lost him. Behind the smoke of Hawkeye’s distraction was nothing. Tony spun around in a frantic manner but found nobody.

“Where did you go, you son of a bi--” and then Tony found him as Loki appeared in front of him with his staff quickly puncturing into the chest of Tony’s armor. The impact rattled the entire Iron Man suit and every system flickered as the power was disrupted. Tony grabbed at the staff to try and pull it free even as Loki shot a bolt of that powerful magic he had hit Thor with directly into his face. The suit went dark and with Tony trapped inside the useless metal was sent cart wheeling toward the earth below.

Beyond his caring, Loki did not take notice of the Hulk jumping across building tops in order to reach Tony as he fell. The suit began a reboot of it’s power even as large green hands plucked him from the sky before crashing into the side of a business building.

“Loki, enough!” Thor shouted, soaring through the sky gracefully, Mjolnir leading the way, even with the chiseled frown on his face. “You’ve endangered enough lives today.”

“You deny me this world, Thor?” Loki asked even as Mjolnir collided with his staff and the two Asgardians deflected each other’s blows. “Do you not see their need for a leader? For a king to lead them to peace? They fight amongst each other daily! What I have done to implant myself into this world is nothing compared to what they do to their own kind!”

Thor shook his head, golden hair stained with dirt and blood shaking in the wind. “Not like this. This is not the way, Loki.”

“This is the only way they understand!” Loki lunged forward, swinging the long staff in his hands and sending out a way wave of magical energy in front of him toward Thor. Thor, disliking being on the defensive, pushed his hammer in front of him to split the magical attack apart around him and he came forward to crash into Loki.

The two grappled with one another, attempting to both break free and to strike at the other. Neither worrying about their sudden descent toward the ground. It wasn’t for them to worry about such a thing because neither would find the fall to be fatale and neither would allow themselves to reach that point. The roar of air rushing past them as they fell drowned out Loki’s angry roar and Thor’s call for an end to their fighting.

Finally, with an impatient thrust of his leg, Thor dislodged himself from the man he knew as his brother. Though the same blood did not flow through their veins brothers they were in Thor’s eyes. And so when it came to the follow up blow he did not strike with the power of the God of Thunder but as guilt ridden brother and that would hardly be enough to stop Loki. The Jotun adopted son of Odin steadied himself in the sky using powers of his sorcery just as Thor used the power residing in Mjolnir to keep flight.

“I will not yield, Thor. I will have this realm for my own,” Loki stated plainly.

“If you will not yield then you will be stopped,” Thor answered with a sadness in his voice. “Though I do not wish it to come to that.”

“What you wish is of no concern to me,” Loki said sharply. “Your wishes have been my concern for far too long but no longer. This day will belong to Loki, not Thor.”

“Loki, please,” Thor pleaded. “Your anger is misplaced, brother.”

Loki bared his teeth at Thor because that was the last thing he wanted to hear from Thor’s mouth. “Brother”. It was a word that no longer held the warmth it used to. Tainted by the cold truth of Odin’s lies and plans. Corrupted by the knowledge that no matter what Loki did he would always be the Jotun every Asgardian despised. The sincere love in Thor’s eyes only stung Loki as false and cruel.

“Let us return to Asgard and leave these mortals to their world and in-fighting,” Thor tried to reason but there was no reasoning with a broken soul. At least not when it is in a state of distress and though Loki would never admit to it, distress is what he felt.

“Asgard has no place for me,” Loki hissed. “Brother. Not any longer.”

“Asgard is your home,” Thor shouted. He was growing frustrated and angry. How his brother could not see sense was beyond him and it hurt his heart to see Loki in such a menacing state.

“I know your intentions,” Loki said. “You would stop me in order to claim Midgard for your own. To rule over Asgard is not enough, is it?”

Thor, the golden son of Asgard, who was destined to inherit Asgard would see him rule over nothing but his own will. And even Thor would try to conquer that. Midgard as the Asgardians called Earth would be under Thor’s rule or no other’s, as Loki saw it. Thus leaving Loki with nothing but table scraps to be begged for under the boots of Odin and Thor.

“Loki--”

“I will have what is mine to take,” Loki said angrily. “Though I am born of Jotun blood I am still a prince to have a kingdom and you will not take it from me.”

Thor opened his mouth to retort but unknown to him the humans lingering on the ground below had grown impatient with the brotherly conversation. Arrows from Hawkeye’s bow came hurtling into the sky. The first one, a true arrow, bounced harmlessly off of Loki’s helmet but the following arrows were not of a true nature. They harnessed the power to explode on impact and as the second one reached Loki it did just that, sending the Asgardian reeling backward. He was prepared for the next onslaught of firepower and deflected the explosions.

“Your mortal hounds are persistent but it will cost them dearly,” Loki threatened. His hands glowed with a magical power and he released it at Hawkeye, who stood unhidden on a rooftop below. Hawkeye cursed as was his custom and dove across the building top to avoid being roasted by the strength of Loki’s attack.

Thor would not stand by and allow Loki to attack so he swung Mjolnir outward and struck Loki hard enough to knock the golden horned helmet from his dark head.

Loki turned to retaliate but was struck by a sudden and powerful blast from Iron Man as he was finally able to reboot his suit in order to join the fray.

“Bring as many mortal allies as you desire, Thor, it makes no difference,” Loki shouted.

“Thor, this needs to end,” Tony said from beyond his suit.

Loki lashed out at Tony with his staff but Thor threw Mjolnir in the path, knocking the weapon Loki was using as spear from his hands. It was a weapon of considerable power and without it Loki was weakened significantly which was Thor’s intention. Though Thor thought this would help turn the tide of Loki’s rage it did not.

He continued his assault but this time on Thor himself. Magic flying from his hands at a speed that startled Thor. The mighty Asgardian warrior could do nothing but guard himself from his brother’s blows and wait for a chance to strike himself.

“Thor!” Tony yelled and began to charge up a large blast aimed at Loki.

The power of the blast was immense and even though it was earth technology it disrupted Loki’s attacks and forced him to fall backward.

“Thor! Now or never!”

Thor swung his hammer quickly over his head, whirl winding it as he prepared. It was a moment of hesitation for him because Thor had never wanted to battle against his brother. He had only wanted good for Loki and had dreamt of a day that they would rule side by side. The strength of brothers together was greater than that of two brothers apart. But as a protector for Midgard he had a duty. Letting go of his guilt, for the moment, because it no longer mattered what part he had played in turning Loki to his current path. It was his place now to stop Loki from venturing further along it.

“Thor!” Tony’s voice was desperate and Thor could not ignore him.

“Loki, enough!” Thor bellowed as he let his hammer guide him forward.

The impact of Thor’s blow and Loki’s body made a thundering noise and concussive blast outward. Tony’s suit was not strong enough to withstand the force and he was sent falling toward the earth once more.

All eyes were aimed upward at the scene, momentarily blinded by the flash of lightening that accompanied Thor’s attack. As the light faded from the sky a dark and still body was seen falling, unprotected from gravity’s hold. The body collided with the concrete of a New York street but it was not the gruesome scene one would suspect from such a fall. It wasn’t a destroyed body that greeted Steve Rogers and Tony Stark as they were the first to arrive on the spot, but the intact yet unconscious form of Loki.

“I don’t believe it,” Tony said in surprise.

“Why am I not surprised,” Steve breathed.

Tony poked Loki’s side with his metal clad foot and when he saw no response he put his foot on Loki’s chest and aimed his left hand at the quiet Asgardian god just to make sure.

“Stand aside,” came Thor’s voice from above. The large frame of Thor suddenly blotted out the sun as he descended gently to the ground.

“It’s alright, Thor. We got him. I think you knocked him out,” Tony said with a relieved breath.

“I said, stand aside!” Thor repeated and forcibly pushed Tony off of Loki.

“Hey now--”

Steve put a hand on Tony’s shoulder and with a quiet “Tony” he silenced the offended billionaire.

The two remained silent as they watched Thor bend over the still form of his brother. Neither of them understood quite what was between Thor and Loki and why Thor’s brother had come to Earth but both knew it would end badly if they tried to get in the way now.

“Brother,” Thor said softly. He cupped a large hand against Loki’s cheek and wished for a more joyful time. This was not how Thor had ever envisioned their journey.

Loki’s eyes fluttered open and he recoiled from Thor’s touch but did not attempt anything further because he had already suffered the defeat and failure. To have been struck down by Thor in front of all his mortal companions. It was a new triumph that Thor will forever hold over him. It burned like acid in Loki’s mind but he met Thor’s eyes with the steady gaze of one who had been victorious.

“You are to return with me to Asgard. We will figure out what to do with you there,” Thor told him. Loki huffed angrily and sneered.

“Hold on a minute here,” Steve stepped forward. “He attacked our people and he will have to stand trial for that here.”

Thor turned to look at Steve over his shoulder with such intensity that Steve halted and closed his mouth. “You do not have the ability to contain him. And you do not have the authority to try a god of Asgard.”

“Authority!?” Steve sputtered. “You aren’t beyond judgement, Thor. I don’t care if he is your brothe--”

“Silence!” Thor demanded. “He will not remain here to stand a mortal trial.”

“Look at you,” Loki spat. “Arguing with these creatures like they mattered.”

“They do matter, Loki.” Thor said. “They do. But you are my concern, not theirs.”

Loki shook his head, “Your concerns have rarely been about me.”

“That is false, and you know it, brother,” Thor answered.

Thor reached down and grabbed Loki by the arm and hauled him to his feet. Loki held himself straight and tall and refused to acknowledge Tony or Steve’s presence as if he were there by choice. But to Thor’s eyes he could see the fatigue in Loki’s posture and the burning disgrace in his eyes. This wasn’t the end of it but Thor had hope there would be an end to it someday soon.

“Let us be off this disgusting realm then, if we must,” Loki said sharply.

Thor frowned sadly at Loki but nodded and raised his hammer to the sky. A torrent of power erupted from the hammer and the sky at the same time and what appeared to be lightening connected to the two things for a mere moment and then the two Asgardians were gone.

“And here I thought I had family issues,” Tony said to break the silence.
